Default Watch out for Virginia......

Here in Virginia we are not allowed to own or use any radar detector.

Thanks to GEICO Insurance almost every Police car in Virginia is equipped with Radar Detector "detectors".

Even our Motor-Cycle cops have them and they are pretty good at finding the people going through our state using a perfectly harmless radar Detector.

I got pulled over doing 45 in a 25 which is "Reckless Driving" here in Virginia. The first thing I did was take the car to a official station to have my Speedometer calibrated. It was dead on, indicated 55 was actual 55 mph, and I was in trouble.

I went to court and while heading into the building there was a young guy in a suit running to get in the building so I stood and held the door for him.

When I got into the courtroom I was happy to see that the running man was in fact the presiding Judge for my case. I told him about the speedometer being tested and verified and then I threw myself to the "Mercy of the Court". The judge reduced it to a "10 over" ticket and I paid the fine and still had my license. I was very lucky and very thankful as well.

It pays to be a nice guy.

I haven't shown up for a lot of out of state tickets. Not worth my time to go 500 miles to fight a $150 ticket. My insurance has never gone up for one or two simple moving violations.

No body mentioned anything about showing up for out of state tickets when I made this post. I don't either as in N.Y. where I live out of state tickets are NOT recorded on your driver's license. Get any kind of ticket other than a DUI out of state and nobody will ever know you got one after you pay it.

69 corvette convertible 427/390, 4 spd on my way to daytona after coming back from 3 month boomer patrol.

this detector worked okay but today i use a escort redline with a blendmount. haven't had a ticket for speeding in a car in over 40 years, actually feel naked driving without a radar detector.

This past summer I was on my way to a car club event and was traveling the freeway but just going with the flow of traffic. I noticed a black Toyota in my mirror coming fairly fast and constantly changing lanes like he was running a slalom course around the cars in both lanes.

I had a black Suburban in the lane ahead of me so I switched to the slow lane and the black Toyota proceeded to tailgate the Suburban flashing his high beams to let him by. The Suburban stayed in his lane and maintained his speed causing the Toyota to pass him on the right and then swerve into his lane cutting him off and forcing him to brake.

That's when I found out that our local highway patrol used unmarked black Suburbans as ghost cars. It made my day and took a while for me to lose the grin on my face as that driver must have learned an expensive lesson that day and might have ended up using public transit for a while.
I would have loved to seen that

Sure about that? Know 2 people that never paid and they got warrants now in those states.
Friend has an oustanding violation in Ca, AZ will not issue him a license.

Used to be as you said its forgotten about so to speak not so sure today?

I didn't mean disregard the tickets. All I meant was if you got a ticket in any other state and live in N.Y. you could just pay it (you know mail it in with the fine amount) and suffer no penalty. However if you would like to know the laws from N.Y. here they are:

Your NYS Driver License will be suspended if you fail to answer a ticket for a moving violation in any state except Alaska, California, Michigan, Montana, Oregon or Wisconsin. Your license will remain suspended until you answer the ticket. Likewise, drivers from any state, except those from the six states listed above, will have their driver licenses suspended in their own state for failure to answer a moving violation in New York State.

The New York State DMV does not record out-of-state convictions of moving traffic violations of New York State non-commercial licensed drivers, except for traffic offenses committed in the provinces of Ontario and Quebec in Canada.

GA doesn't play around. You're in for a world of hurt on your insurance, let alone the fines the state will make you pay.

Forget a radar detector, I'd be selling the Corvette and buying a moped.

To the OP, do your research.

I did mine back in 2010 and settled on a Valentine 1.

Research and compare the following:

Escort Redline XR
vs
Valentine 1
vs
Escort Max 360
vs the older
Escort 9500ix

Those seem to be the top choices. Whatever you get, use a BlendMount to tap into the mirror power supply and run it low profile.

The V1 is undectable. No way I'm driving through there without one. I grew up there. LEO'S are all over the place.

The V1 is definitely detectable...

Against the ancient VG-2, the V1 is undetectable, sure, like most other radar detectors.

However, against modern radar detector detectors like the Spectre Elite, the V1 is very detectable.

Check out my article about radar detector detectors for more information.

I do not speed in anything under 55 as it's usually residential, city, or there are children around.
I enjoy my Vette as a fine road car. I know it can go fast. I enjoy it more driving it at slower speeds, the way it rides, corners, torque going up hills, just cruising on back roads. Speed limits are set for a reason. Safety. If you have a need for speed, take it to a track. Don’t risk the safety of others for your personal pleasure. There....I just saved you hundreds on a radar detector.

I agree. Radar detectors have saved my bacon hundreds of times over the past 35 years. I laugh at the idiots who say they are useless because the LEOs have instant on radar. On an interstate the LEOs using instant on will hit enough of the cars in front of you that a good detector will pick up the radar far enough out for you to slow down. Often the LEOs that run radar traps are too lazy to use the instant function and just leave the radar running giving a warning a mile or more out. They catch plenty of speeders this way so why bother to work harder. A truly dedicated LEO carefully using instant on very selectively can be an issue. Thankfully few very are that dedicated. The one area that instant can get you is on a two lane twisty road where the LEO is traveling in the opposite direction and hits the instant on as soon as you see one another coming over a hill or around a curve. In areas like that I just slow down.

Using Waze adds another layer of protection especially against laser. Together a good radar detector and Waze along with situational awareness will defeat 95% of speed traps. For the former LEOs that will say this is not true you simply don't know how many times drivers have been alerted and slowed before they went pass you.

Will the Judge reduce the fine? Maybe, some will depending on your testimony (Bull S**t Story) and other factors. Is it cost-effective to get an attorney to have the fine reduce? No!.. You end up paying more for the attorney than the cost of the fine reduction. Guilty is guilty. In otherwords, you're just as guilty at 1 MPH over as 20 MPH hour over, just the fine may be reduced.

A majority of the cops do not drive around with the radar constantly on however, some do. Usually when they observe a possible speeder they will instantly turn it on. In most states, the Officer has to testify that they visually estimated your speed within 5 MPH in addition to the radar reading.

There is no law in using a radar detector in California.

In some states, they have a fudge factor on what speed they start citing you because of the courts do not want to see the 5 MPH over cites. In California, that is usually 15 MPH for a majority of the court districts unless their are circumstances such as extreme traffic and/or weather conditions, and school zones. The key factor in speed is "Reasonable and Prudent" for conditions.

This is my opinion on radar detectors. All the radar detector is going to is tell you that you been had. Also, I was told that since most of the newer cars these days have lane departure, passive speed control, and other safety features that uses the radio frequencies that are in the receive frequency range of a radar detector the radar detector will be alerting you on every car with those safety features as you drive down the road. I'm curious if that is true?

In addition to using radar, a lot of the agencies in California are using Lasers (LiDar) and these Lidars will give the Officer not only the speed reading but, the distance reading and take a picture of those readings and your car at the same time.
