I just replaced my battery about three months ago everything was working fine until yesterday when my car wouldn’t start and it sounded like the battery but my electric windows and my stereo were working just fine. I had a jump started and was able to go to AutoZone they ran a test on the battery and said that the battery was working fine so the guy said most likely it’s my alternator . I called the GM dealership and they said it be no heroes your place $700 apart and the rest for labor blah blah blah
I have a friend that said that they would replace the alternator for me .
so first things first can you please provide me with adequate instructions to do so parts and what not needed. Secondly , I do not want aftermarket alternator so I found that I believe I need the AC Delco 150 a? But I don’t know if that’s exact model I have been currently and I know that I need to make sure it’s an automatic one versus a manual alternator . I have no idea where to buy an alternator from who is reputable and what give me a really fast because I’m going to try to replace it this weekend. I live in Phoenix if that helps
You may want to check the battery cable connections at the starter first before replacing the alternator.
It is pretty common problem with threse cars.
Did you try and move the battery cables to verify they are tight and also look to see if there is any signs of corrosion on the attachment point on the battery. If the car is running and the voltage gauge shows it running around 13-14 volts there is no issue with the alternator. If the alternator is bad, common don't go to the dealership. Buy one and have your friend install it if you can'r no special parts needed to replace it, just another alternator.
You want to check all options to be sure the Alt. is the problem as once you install a new Alt. you can't return it....or at least thats the way it use to be..?
And don't ever go to the dealer for an alternator. $900? That means about $700 for labor when you can do it with two wrenches (one for the alternator bracket bolt, one for the belt tensioner) in literally 10 minutes. It still blows my mind that people go to dealerships for things as simple as this. If you can change a light bulb you can change an alternator.
I’m taking it to this other place that has good reviews and they are gonna find out for sure if it’s the alternator
my car isn’t turning on at all
so i have to tow it to this place first and then if it is the alternator they were gonna give me an aftermarket alternator for later with a 36k warranty for 750
i would love to do it myself but i don’t even know which alternator to buy
Trust me i would rather not pay 750 but if it turns out to be my alternator could someone direct me to a good website that i could get a good standing alternator shipped to me within like a day ? Haha i have work on Monday and i have no car knowledge but I’m willing to learn and try
thank you for clarifying that
another question. Instead of towing my car to the shop do you think it would be better for me to get a Mobile diagnostic mechanic to run some tests to find out what’s wrong or are they typically not reliable ?
