This is so true. In Texas you can insure your Vette as “leisure” or “recreational use” if you’re an old retired guy like me and literally drive nowhere specific for no good reason at all! (Okay, you don’t have to be older to be retired or to use your Vette just for fun/leisure, but that’s my situation)

Our 2016 Highlander costs more to insure than our 2013 Vette.

I got GEICO and my cost is $300 every 6 months. I also live in NC but not a big city as Charlotte.

The only vehicle I found cheaper to insure in NC is a Miata. It was about 15 less than a corvette with full coverage.

The way I do it is I own a 2006 Ford van that is just under liability that is primary vehicle. The 2006 Corvette is a second car and it has 1000 deductibles on collision and comp. Last payment was about 300 for six months for both vehicles.

Apparently, we get raked over the coals in Louisiana since I pay $810 for 6 months for my 2011 GS and $589 for a 2016 F150 and I have no accidents and a great credit score. I just recently shopped around and those are great rates. You guys have it good!

Does the city make much of a difference? My quote was actually based on Connelly Springs, NC. That's where I grew up and we never changed my address for college. I'll be moving to Salisbury in about a week and changing my address as well.

For some reason I wouldn't have expected the statistics to make the Miata cheaper. The only Miata's I've seen are auto-crossed very often.

Guess I shouldn't apply to jobs in Louisiana then

I have an 06' w/ 37k miles just west of Dallas near Denton, TX, I have AAA Insurance and they allow you to pay for 12 months. I pay $635/year for my Vette for full coverage, I'm early 30's w/ clean driving record. I pay more for my daily driver, an 05 Mustang V6 w/ 119k miles on it. Full coverage is $676/year for the Stang.

I'm also about to sign up for their program that records driving habits for a 10% discount, so it'll drop to $572/year for the Vette and $608/year for the Stang, respectively.

I'd suggest against doing this. Progressive tried the same thing with me. Do some research on the Web before pulling the trigger.

I'm going to entertain it for the time being. It is not the plug in "snap shot". It is an app you download. I'm not sure if the app has to be on/open each time you drive, or what? I haven't found many reviews about the program yet. https://www.texas.aaa.com/insurance/...y/onboard.html

I understand the statistics, but all of this does seem somewhat crazy to me.

In my case, I really don't understand how a 230,000 mile Taurus that's worth $1,500 could cost more to insure than say a $20,000 corvette.

Zip code makes a big difference.

You're confused because you're looking at it wrong. The value of the car doesn' matter, cars are cheap. The damage to people, that' what gets expensive. An ambulance ride costs more than your whole Taurus. An overnight stay in the er is more than a Vette. Inexpensive cars are more likely to be driven, wrecked, and hurt people. Cars like the vette don't get wrecked as often, and don't injure people as often as a result.

That is a very good point! Now it does make perfect since.

This might be a little off the subject … but how much is really enough insurance ? Hit and hurt a bus load of kids , hit an expensive piece of machinery , ect.$$$ . Here in the great state of Illinois it is law you have insurance , limit required is very low , but still carry uninsured and underinsured motorists , kind of double a double whammy ?

My biggest peave about auto insurance is that you have to carry liability on every vehicle you own and drive, yet you can only drive one of them at a time. It should be one flat rate regardless of how many vehicles you own.

BINGO!

You can pack 5 people in a Taurus and a serious enough accident can kill them all, but the much higher expense is injuring them all. At best, you might get two in a Corvette. Plus, given the years, the SRS system in the newer model Vette is going to be better.

I learned this the hard way with a couple of Jaguar XKRs I've owned. They are only two seaters, but they have an unusable back seat, so technically, the car can carry at least 4.

This.

More expensive to insure an Accord or something of the sort.
