Any reason to keep an old ECM? Mine is being changed because according to the tech, the old one has failed. I don't know failure mode nor what part is actually bad (diode, trace, ROM etc.).
ECM's are easy to pull apart to check the boards to solve the problem since most of the time is just cold solder joint problems, but unless you have the talent to do such so you don't have to buy another ECM, then would save the old ECM to send it out to be repaired.
Hell you may need it down the line, or could just sell it once repaired isntead.
Simply put, with GM stopping the supply a great deal of C6 parts now, would not throw away a ECM that could be repaired.
To take it one step farther, on the C7, GM does not have any new dash clusters for repairs on the C7's if a cluster goes out, so they are doing a $450 swap on the dash clusters, given you are re-furbished cluster, and sending the you give them to be serviced for the next swap instead.

Thanks, I've been thinking more about keeping the ECM, I can learn from it. Soldering is not an issue, I'm fairly proficient and my wife did it for a living before we retired.
