Battery Tender- Brand?

Ive heard great things about CTek - but Ive had my Battery Tender for years and its never given me an ounce of trouble. I also like Battery Tender because they offer so many different connections and extension cables. Those 12 or 25 extension cables just make life so much easier - Im not sure if CTek offers that or not... My Tenders (I have one for each Vette) cost me around $45 on Amazon.

I've installed and used some pretty sophisticated battery conditioners/chargers/maintainers over the years, even some that had charging cycles set for running from an alternator to condition/charge/maintain and temperature compensated. The one technical aspect of the cheaper models is the final float voltage. Too high and you go through electrolyte, too low isn't optimal for your battery. If you look at the technical descriptions from the various manufacturers, you will see float voltages all over the map. You want to be as close to 13.2v as possible. I haven't looked recently, but when I was looking for an inexpensive maintainer, the one that came closest was the Deltran versions. (Battery Tender versions). If I want to do a bulk charge, I'll use a cheap Sears one I've had for many years, and I'll monitor the voltage until it hits 14.2vdc. I'll then remove it and top it off with a battery tender jr. The Battery Tender Jr, will bring back a flat battery, but it will take some time to do it.

My car has been sitting for a month on a Deltran BT JR, so I checked the battery voltage at the terminals and checked the electrolyte level. The battery measured 13.07vdc, and all cells are at their full Mark's. If the float voltage was higher, like 13.4 or 13.5, the battery would still be okay but there would be a greater loss of electrolyte.

When I was a snow bird I used the ones from Harbor Freight, 5.00 to 8.00 depending on sale prices. My battery was always charged up when I returned in the spring. What more do you need!

I wired in a pigtail to the battery and hook it up directly to the battery. You can leave the hood up or run the wire out at the right corner of the hood. That works very well for me. I've thought about running a pigtail out into the right front wheel-well and plugging it in there but I'm concerned about keeping it waterproof.

I just bought a 6amp Schumacher charger, it has float mode monitoring, will that work ok? Or should buy a battery maintainer type instead?

I have been using the same CTEK daily for over 6 years. Never had a problem with it.
