Hello everyone, I recently bought a 2005 c6 base with 140000 miles on it, i am the third owner and first owner was his dd so miles don't concern me as it was taken care of. The question is the crank pulley has some play but no noise from the belt and with this many miles already should it be replaced? I found another issue this weekend while underneath that required me to pull the radiator and lower support so all that is left in front is the steering and z51 cooler to yank the pulley. However if its lasted this long should I just leave alone??
thanks
You might as well replace the oem damper as the car has 140,000 miles on her, As the others have mentioned, the ATI brand is a quality replacement part (although the GM part lasted 140,000 miles, right? )
Yea, it's the stock dampener. Ati seems nice but damn 400 bucks! Thinking powerbond is the route I will end up going. Thanks for the all the advice...more crap to pull off and **** my wife off even more..lol
It's not the cost of a single HB that hurts. It's the labor charge that you have to pay a second time if you don't invest is a lifetime quality HB. I have had three OEM HBs in Red. I've paid the labor for two -- the second HB was bad right out of the Parts department and replaced for free by the dealership. Next spring I'm having #3 replaced with an ATI. And having it double-pinned.
without a doubt, replace it, I have a 2005 and mine just failed. Do not use a oem balancer
tony, I am going to ask you to do us a favor...can you tell us exactly what the outcome was of your "failure", and be honest, please. Caused a wreck? Destroyed the engine? Tore up the radiator? Ripped the end of the crank off? Etc. I am betting you lost the belts, and maybe bent the fan blade, or similar. Please tell us, honestly. Thanks in advance for sharing.

I had a squeaking noise and had a wobble, I was pretty sure it needed replacement, but before I had a chance to have a mechanic check it out I was on the highway and the belt broke. Had to have car towed to my station. nothing was damaged other than the belt tensioner, you can actually see where the pulley is separating from the rubber ring. since I only live a mile from the service station and going to have it replaced in the spring with the forums recommendation using a power bond since its going in storage for the winter. I was lucky the balance didn't come apart and the bely didn't do any other damage. by the way the previous owner replaced it less than 4000 miles ago but with a GM oem balancer
Thank you for the answer. Research I have done indicates that is what usually occurs. No damage, but a needed tow. At least you knew it needed repair, so were not shocked by the failure. Power bond is a good choice, and not terribly expensive. Good luck with the repair.
Harmonic Dampener off.....crank seal looks like is is leaking a little so that's next. Going with the regular Powerbond... All in all not a bad job but it is aggravating the way everything snakes around other stuff. I dont know if the z51 package is different in any way but I could not get to the 2 lines on the rack to remove without pulling the alt bracket. Also I read somewhere that you can pull it out the passengers side but how does one clear the ac compressor? Anyway it's done and learned a lot and saved a some cash doing it myself... only have one other weird issue maybe clutch issue, it doesn't slip on anything but it engages hard regardless of how hard I try to feather the pedal....maybe I'll start tearing the rear end out next...lol
Supturbo, z51 adds power steering cooler but that's easy. I agree with you, I did mine by myself and other than time consuming, it was fairly easy and saved a ton on labor.
