Default American-made Header Opinions

Looking for opinions on American-made headers only: ARH, Kooks, TPS, etc.

I'd appreciate any feedback.

Tough to find good deals on name brand exhaust, for sure. Can't go wrong with LG. I would go with the larger primaries (1-7/8") as they'll breathe better if you add supporting mods. (Heads, cam, etc.) If you're sticking with long tubes and bolt ons- 1-3/4" would be fine.

If you've checked the various vendors on here already, then it's either them or LG. Now's a good time to just walk in tho if you're that close and see if someone wants to make a sale before Christmas to book in December and calendar year '18. Can't hurt.

Everything I've read from former LG people is, similar to the above qualified statement: go more than 3/4 if you're going to make much more power add-ons. Anything less in equipment add ons and you're not optimizing w. a 7/8.

I bought mine on Ebay. I made a bid and it was counter bid, so I saved a little. Had local installer do the work. They are excellent headers. I got the 3/4.

I'm only a little over an hour away from their location in Anna, TX so it's definitely driving distance. I do plan on adding an A&A supercharger so I'll be going with the 1-7/8", and thanks for that tip to both you and Verruckt ZR1. The price is the same either way according to their site. I'm just wondering now where I can get them ceramic coated around here. I'll have to ask 21st Century Muscle Cars when I talk to them about an install & tune appointment.

I'd ask both shops who they'd use. I just did a quick look for powder coaters for headers in DFW area. One's called Specialized Performance Coating, Arlington TX. I'm sure there are others and betw. LG and 21st they'd know the ones that probably do the best job. Good luck.

Also, any suggestions on whether I should go with 1-3/4" or 1-7/8'?
Have you checked out CCA? They have LG stuff on sale. I'd go 1-7/8".
RPI Designs has them for $1504.83 with coupon & w/o cats.

I don't know about LG's, but one of the vendors here on the forum are offering free ceramic coating on either Kooks or ARH headers if you purchase from them btw, get the 1 7/8" size if you are going with mods

Ed, I have the 1-3/4 after chatting with LG about my plans for the car. They suggested the 1-3/4" and said they would provide a little more low end torque than the 1-7/8" and that unless I were going forced induction, the 1-3/4" would be more than enough. I purchased mine from CCA which was a couple hundred cheaper than running over to LG to pick them up (factor in sales tax at LG, and message CCA for a forum discount).

Ed, sometimes LG will have used sets that they have replaced on customer cars you can pick up very reasonable.

If i had to do it over again i wouldn't waste my money on LG, I have hated my LG 1 7/8 since the day i have installed them. Side note get a set with a ball flange design like Kooks, ARH or even dynatech.

Could you expand on what you dislike about the LG 1 7/8, please?

If I was buying brand name it would definitely be a tri-y setup. If not I'd be rocking Ebay ones. Steel is steel.

Thanks for this info Jab, I'll be reaching out to CCA. I'm all for saving myself a couple hundred. That would leave extra left over for a short shifter. I do plan on adding a supercharger, which is why I'm going with the 1-7/8".

I appreciate that, but I really prefer to get a brand new set.

Curious as to what you dislike about our headers? We're always looking for ways to improve and any feedback would be appreciated.

Can someone explain the ball flange thing in the post above? Pros and cons of having it vs not having it? Thanks, Jason

Just a FYI, but on long tube headers, look how they are going to connect to the mid pipes.

The best design I say was the Pfad, since they have a U type clamp that connected the two together.

Second to that, like the Three bolt flange type collectors , since they too don't tend to leak at the connection.

Note, down side to the OBC header is the X pipe with high flow cats, since added two slip fittings with bands to the pipe your really don't want. So X pipe with high flow cats is fitted first for the rear X pipe sections,/tacked in place, then X pipe high flow cats pulled to do a full welds at the X pipe after the high flow cats. This way, you end up with 3 bolt flange connectors at the X pipe to headers, and the end of X pipe slip joint to muffler pipe only instead.

As for slip fit types, have to use a sealing compound to keep the pipes from leaking at the clamp band connection points, and some sealing compounds can be a PITA down the road to get the pipes to release if you need to pull the X pipe at a later date. And no, welding is not an option, since at some point, going to need to remove the X pipe to pull it or the headers and the not something that you want to have to cut apart.
