All the LS2 engines were of the wet sump variety. On manual transmission Grand Sport coupes, a dry sump LS3 was standard. The dry sump cars hold 10 quarts of oil in a remote mounted tank. An easy way to tell, is by dipstick location. A wet sump engine will have the engine oil dipstick on the passenger side of the motor, sticking down into the oil pan. A dry sump engine has the dipstick in the remote mounted oil tank, which on a C6 is located where the battery normally goes on a wet sump car. Dry sump LS3 C6 coupes have the battery in the right rear cubby, like a Z06 or ZR1.

If you don’t track your car there’s no benefit to have a dry sump system

Wet sump LS3's are built at the St.Catharines engine plant in Ontario Canada. The dry sump LS3's were each hand built by a single person from start to finish at the Wixom Michigan plant where the LS7 and LS9 were also assembled. They use a forged steel crank, instead of the cast crank found in the wet sump versions. Every dry sump LS3 motor has a plate on it with the persons name who assembled it. There are rumors that the hand built engines had slightly higher performance that the regular versions, but I'm not sure I believe it.
