Could you explain what you mean about using a tie back on the part?

My 2012 just flipped 40k last week. Is this something that can be done by one's self? I have seen where the cable and connector are on the tranny, but imagine the shifter would be the tough one. I guess that is where it tends to break?

Brilliant, lets put a little plastic piece in the vicinity of hot exhaust pipes. What could go wrong. A nice metal connector with metal bushings would have to cost WAY too much.

It is a plastic locking pawl that may not get the electrical signal to release that causes the "stuck in park."

Search the forum, there are a zillion threads about it.

Yeah I have seen that but that is related to a different issue. The folks here are talking about the plastic bushings breaking at the connection on the transmission itself. In those case, just the bushing would need to be replaced since that is the only part that is impacted if it broke, or is there a reason to replace the entire cable?

I was wondering if taking care of this would prevent the cable from falling. Would forcing the shifter out of park also contribute to the cable plastics wearing out?

Just read another post. About a bushing breaking that connects the shifter to the cable as well, I see that is where the zip tie comes into play. I guess both ends have issues along with the stuck in park issue.

The pawl is plastic and can be sniped off with side cutters.

"Locking" is not the same as "looking."

I know nearly everybody today is either illiterate and/or never proofreads before posting, so errors like he made are to be expected.

My point was it is easier to cut it off than tie it back.

I tied mine back several years ago before I saw the one members idea of connecting a small cable to it and have the cable running into the console so if you need it you can give it a tug. Nifty idea but not sure on how long it would be before you wound up having to pull the darn cable every time.

I replaced my bushings on my 05 and it had around 40K. The shifter side was a goner and it crumbled when I (gently) tugged on it. The tranny side was still in great condition and could've gone for awhile more but I changed it anyway. I got my bushings from bushingfix.com . They're kind of a rip off but it comes with an installation tool which made the job a lot easier so to me it was worth it.

I cut the plastic locking pawl off. I'm surprised there's no aftermarket cable with spherical ends to eliminate any chance of any plastics cracking! If it's the heat that's destroying the plastic ends maybe this would help or prevent them from stressing due to extreme heat from the exhaust. https://www.lgmotorsports.com/corvet...nel-plate.html

I had mine towed to Dealer last year. Its a '08 with 33,000 miles on it. Cost was $320.00 to replace cable assembly. I was in a parking lot and shifted to reverse and that was all she wrote.

This subject has bothered me of late. I've been a member of this forum since 2004. This is my 4th Vette after being Vette-less for 7 years while owning a 2011 Camaro. Each of the 4 Corvettes had strengths and weaknesses. I learned a lot of those by reading Vette magazines, books and this forum. I stumbled over this plastic grommet issue weakness a couple of weeks ago on this forum. I researched it and found that enough C6 owners had this issue so I needed to take it seriously. I did not want to worry every time I drove my 45,000 mile '06 Corvette . So I called Macmulkin in Nashua, NH my dealership where I purchased it last August and now have an appointment scheduled for next Friday to have the transmission cable replaced. It may never have become an issue, but paranoia is a bitch. Good luck with your decision.

I have a 2008 coupe w/46K and a 2009 vert w/25K and both cables are still working as intended......

Enjoy,

When I changed my oil yesterday I went through the manual inputting the information into the maintenance chart. I also looked through the couple papers from previous owners visit. There was one that was related to vehicle being hard to shift into reverse and they adjusted the linkage. Guess I need to go ahead and order the piece just in case and have the tools on hand. Rather not get stranded

My shifter linkage bushing failed at 84000 miles and left me stranded at work. I fixed it in the parking lot after watching youtube and a trip to O'Reilly's.
