I read the manuals, followed the instructions, made sure GPS was active - nothing.

Well, you don't say what year your Z is, but if it is 2010 or older, and the battery was disconnected after which the clock wouldn't display, then you spent a bunch of $$ for no good reason, unless you just wanted a better head unit. Nothing in the manual would help you because the problem was caused by a software defect in the NAV unit. There is a free fix available. A reasonable person would have searched a bit for the problem and solution, IMHO.
