Don't drop your key fob
Leaving the gym yesterday, I dropped the fob and the two (cheap plastic) halves and circuit board came apart. Put them back together as I have many times changing batteries, got to the car and nothing. Took it apart several more times, checked the contacts etc and finally had Uber take me home to get the other fob. Drove to the dealer for a new one ($164) and will program that one today. Thinking about putting a small rubber band around the new one. I hope the C8 fobs are more durable.

I've dropped mine before over the years and never had an issue. Sounds like you just had some bad luck.
But in general, dont drop things. They tend to.break if you do.

Would the car not start with the fob in the contact slot in the glove box?

I'd recommend one of these, got one for mine. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Chevrolet-C...53.m2749.l2649
Quality of the fob case didn't have great reviews but it turned out to look nice on mine and has held up well so far.

I have a black silicone/rubber cover on mine, saves if from breaking if I drop it. But, it doesn't protect if you leave it in your pocket and it goes through the washer and dryer! LOL
I ordered a new #1 FOB from the GM parts house, including shipping it was about $112.00. I found instructions here on the forum how to program it, took all of two minutes to do it.

You dropped key fob, it broke, how did you get into car? I got a OEM fob for my C6 from dealer on close out for $68. Just got lucky they had one left.

Good you asked. Very simple and important to know this. Remove the KEY from the fob and insert it in the receptacle above the license plate, turn the key and the trunk will open. Next, locate the cable in the trunk and pull it to open the door. there is also a cable there to open the gas tank door.
