Default Nav ?

In dash factory nav won't read the disk on a 2008. Nothing happened it just stopped working. I did the compressed air/freon spray in both slots and bought a new Nav disk. No joy. Sorry if this has been asked before. My search feature does not work.

And that helps the OP how?

Try getting a DVD player lens cleaner in case the player is having trouble reading the disc

Regardless if the Nav is any good or not, that was not the question being asked. We all know that it's old technology, there is no denying. It does however do what it's supposed to do to get one from point A to point B, and anywhere in between.
I've used mine since 2009 on over 80K miles of road trips, and it has never let me down. It is not easy to learn and navigate like a Garmin or aftermarket unit, that I totally agree with.
To the question. It's possible that the Nav laser lens is dirty enough that the compressed air will not clean it adequately. You can try a CD/NAV cleaning disc (a good one) and see if that helps. If that doesn't work, then try disconnecting the battery and see if that clears any faults in the player. (re-index windows) once you reconnect battery.
You can try the battery disconnect first if you want to try that.
If all that doesn't work then.....
If you are willing to take the radio surround console out, and remove the Nav unit from the car, then it is possible to remove the top CD player, and get access to the top of the Nav unit to manually clean the laser lens.
If you don't want to do that, then you will either have to buy a used unit, or an aftermarket unit.
Removing top cover:
  • The top CD metal encasement can be accessed by removing the top HU cover. The CD encasement and the bottom DVD encasement are attached to the back portion of the HU using small screws.
  • With the top HU cover removed, the top of the CD case is accessible. The CD laser lens is attached to the sliding tray that tracks the CD. The top of the sliding tray can be manually moved towards the back side, and the lens can be seen and cleaned with a Q-Tip with alcohol. Once cleaned, the sliding tray can be moved back into it's original parked position.
Unfortunately, the top of the DVD cannot be accessed without removing the CD player. The CD player can be removed from the case by removing the small screws in the back of the HU, and also the front screen has to be left open prior to disconnecting the unit power conector.
See the attached thread on the experimentation that took place to get to this stage. Lot's of pics of a broken Nav unit that i took apart, and with help from Kenny94945, he did manage to remove the CD player to get access to the NAV laser lens to clean it. (post #37)

Thanks for all the info. I ordered a lens cleaner disk today. I'm also going to find a long spray tip for the compressed air canister. The removal thing is probably over my head but there are good instructions available..

Not that this is answering your question, BUT, if you do decide to replace that head unit - dont buy a NAV unit. I just put an Pioneer unit that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto - you will NEVER have to mess with a disc or an update disc again. Just connects to your phone and boom your running the latest and greatest everytime. Just wanted to give you that extra information just in case you do swap it out.

May I preface your recommendation not to purchase a NAV head unit? If you live, commute, and never leave a major city or Interstate highway, that’s fine. However, we just returned from a lengthy trip with a new Kenwood nav unit. May I offer that there are many areas of our nation that have little or no cellphone signals. And those are normally the times when you really need the nav functions. Wondering the backroads of America is a wonderful experience. And remember, all who wonder are not lost.

I have the same issue as you on my 2008 vert. I purchased a disc cleaner and it helps for a bit, but it still intermittently goes out. Then I just put the disc cleaner in again for a day and it starts working again.
I don't usually use Nav anyways, I just like everything to work... If you have a compressor with the air blower attachment, you can use a WD-40 red straw to attach to the end and direct the air directly into the DVD slot. Just be sure to hold the red straw so that it doesn't rocket out from the air pressure.
Good Luck.

You make a valid point. But, if your traveling where there is no cell reception, you're probably on a road that isn't on GPS anyway... And for the few times (Im assuming VERY few times) you are in this position, the benefit of not having to deal with discs, updates and the cost far outweigh the one time you're on a back country dirt road, and want NAV.

It may not be true in PA, but there are plenty of paved roads in the US that don't have cell reception, including substantial portions of the four lane Interstates. Being from Oklahoma, I'm thinking that Batman 357 might come in contact with some often.
