I left my keys in my golf bag (by mistake) and closed them in the back of my 2012 Grand Sport. Lo and behold my car was locked with the keys inside.
How can that happen? The keys are IN the car...shouldn't the car detect this and allow you to inlock the doors/hatch?
Take it from one who did the exact thing you did....The car will not unlock, even with the FOB inside the car. that horn beep that you heard once you closed the hatch, that gave you about 10 seconds to open the hatch and get you FOB out of your golf bag.
Luckily at the time, I had Onstar which unlocked my car for me.
I keep a spare hatch key in my wallet , just in case. if I forget to take my FOB and wallet out of the golf bag and close the hatch, I would have to call my wife to bring me the spare FOB.
Here is another option (owner's manual) Lockout Protection :
Your vehicle can be programmed to sound the horn three times and unlock the driver door when both doors are closed and there is a keyless access transmitter inside the vehicle. When the driver door is opened, a reminder chime will sound continuously. The vehicle will remain locked only when at least one transmitter has been removed from the vehicle and both doors are closed. See Vehicle Personalization Page 5-54
Call OnStar or a locksmith. I changed my settings to auto-lock my car but quickly turned it back off after forgetting to take the FOB out a couple of times.
If you still have the OnStar brick on your windshield you can try calling them even if you don't have service with them. You might get a nice agent on the phone who will unlock the car for you.
I do not think that helps. You can manually lock the car and then when you come back, do exactly what I did.
Um, don't you have to unlock the car to put the golf bag in? If the car doesn't lock itself back, then you would have to manually lock it back to have that happen again. Since the first vehicle I owned with a FOB, I got in the habit of only locking or unlocking my vehicles using the FOB.

With the Passive Lock activated, since the FOB is in the golf bag, and the bag is close enough to the car, you can unlock the hatch to put the golf clubs in. That is why one thinks the the FOB is on his/her person. It happens to more than one giolfer, no doubt. I'm quite sure the owner got a horn warning, but didn't realize what it meant until it was too late.

Right, but with PL deactivated, one would have to use the FOB to open the hatch, or open the door with the FOB close enough and then reach in and pop the hatch. But the car then can't lock itself back once the bag is in the back, so you'd have to lock it another way, which requires manual effort, or you have to use the FOB, which you would then realize is not on your person. The OP was making the point that turning PL off would not have made a difference - but it clearly would.

Not anymore. To remotely unlock the car, you have to have an "active" system. And the only way to "activate" the system is to press the Onstar button from inside the car. Onstar will not be able to help you - ask me how I know...

As to how can this happen, the rear hatch area is a dead zone as far as the car seeing the fob to unlock the door. I did some testing a while back, and my 11 GS wouldn't open the door with the fob anywhere inside the car. You'd need another fob outside the car. I left the driver's window down so that I could retrieve the fob when I was testing.
I had my key fall out of my pocket, at a convenience store. Could not get back in the car but can see the remote. AAA had a locksmith come out and pop the door via window.
Few months back I had a key made for the rear hatch. And bought one of those key holders for my wallet.
I leave my FOB in the console often when the car is in the garage and have never been locked out. I'm assuming auto-lock is turned off?The car is a 2012, is it the same for all years? Thanks.

No, I have done it before too, I walked up popped the trunk with the rear button, which does not unlock the doors, only the rear hatch, threw my bag in with my keys in it and shut the hatch, walked to the doors which were still locked and couldn't get in.
The trunk as mentioned is a dead zone, I didn't get the 3 beeps which I had set. I had to get my wife to bring me my extra keys.

Interesting. So there is still a way to lock the keys inside but it isn't exactly the same as the car automatically locking you out. I'm just in the habit of using the FOB for everything outside the car and the buttons for everything when inside the car. I don't think I've used the rear button to pop the hatch even once. So, with the car locked, you can walk up and pop the hatch because the car senses the FOB in your golf bag, but the doors stay locked, but when you throw your bag in the back and close the hatch, you can no longer pop the hatch because it can't sense the FOB any longer? Wow, that is a dead zone.
