Hopefully nothing is alive in there! I pull mine out every three months and vacuum it out. Not much crap gets a chance to build up.

Mine was pretty bad on my 2012 GS with 31k miles, but not nearly as bad as yours. I don't know why people let these go unchanged.

It doesn't look like it was changed in while.

I replace mind every two years, and it looks almost like new, and live in Florida using A/C all the time.

Default cabin filter

That's the first thing I did to my 2010 (new to me) GS. This car has real low milage but, checked the filter and sure enough it was dirty. My other cars I change the cabin filter every year.

is it a manual tranny GS?

Looks like who ever replaced it last did a forced in job and did not care or know what they were doing...

I don't ever replace a cabin filter unless they get damaged somehow. I just put the compressor to them and give them a good reverse blow out and they are good to go. Do the same thing with air filters although I will eventually replace them when they start looking too gnarly....LOL.

It's a A6 and yes from the looks of it crammed in. Looks to me the best way to replace is removing the Intake cover to give enough room to install it more straight in and not on an angle. After seeing what was inside there it makes me want to be sure and check every 6 months

You have to fold it, to make it go in properly, or you get what you have now.

It looks like the car has spent some time in the elements. If you replace the filter and keep the car garaged it will stay clean with an occasional burst of compressed air.

It's much more difficult if you have a dry sump. Pretty much have to twist it into a pretzel.

A knowledgeable filter guy will tell you that blowing them out will force particulate matter back through the fabric. It won't necessarily ruin the filter but it will increase the particulate size allowed to pass through.
