Two weeks ago I posted about the fuel gauge failing on my '13 GS. My gauge was showing slightly above a1/4 tank so I went for a fill up. To my surprise it took 17 gal to fill it up, and when I started the car, the fuel gauge remained where it was and the car ran fine. I reset my trip gauge so I knew about how far I could go for the next fill up. After reading as many posts about the problem, I decided to try the Techron fix before taking it to a mechanic.
Since I have only been able to put about 70 mi on it since this occurred so I wanted to get more miles on it and see if the Techron would work. The fuel gauge continued to register through the last 1/4 and then the low fuel warning light came on and the HUD was showing "Check Gauges." After leaving work this morning, the car died as I was going around a corner at a big intersection. Like a dummy or just out of habit, I put it in park to try and restart it, no go. After about an hour I was able to get a tow truck to come get the car and take it to the dealer (not crap about the dealer please, no one else in town has any experience with this problem).
Now, a question to all, the car has an automatic trans, when in Park, is there any way to shift it in to neutral without the car running. The tow truck driver, said just put it in acc mode and it will shift into neutral, and so did the guy at the dealer(no mechinacs on Saturday). If it is supposed to, this car won't. Interesting note: I went back to the dealer after I got a ride, so I could give them the details. Before I left, I asked for my keys so I could get something out of the car. I got in and put the car in ACC mode just to see if it would shift into neutral, it would not, then I hit the start button, and it started right up??? Any ideas? Prior to today the car had not shown any codes, I'll see what the dealer finds.
You should be able to shift the car from Park to Neutral without the car running. Put it in ACC mode, press the brake pedal, and push in the shift lever button, and it should shift from Park. (that is if your Park solenoid switch is OK) Many A6 shifters have had bad switches, and this prevents the lock out pawl from releasing, and will prevent the shifter from shifting out of Park. This can be an intermittent issue. Most just tie back the pawl so it never happens again, no matter if the Park solenoid fails or not.
There are tons of threads on the "shifter stuck in Park"
If I read your post correctly, you stopped and it wouldn't start, not that you could start but couldn't get into gear?
You could also put the car into Service (only) Mode by holding the acc. button (the bottom of the rocker) for between 5 and 10 seconds (yes, I know it's vague, but that's what the OM says. The dash will light up and look just as if the engine is on.
At this point, you should be able to put the car into gear or N. You can even run codes in this mode.
Make sure to exit this mode as it will not time out like acc. mode.
ps. I never heard of the fuel level sender/sensor failing at anything but flat-line empty (due to fouling/sulfurization) or this causing anything other than a zero reading on the fuel gauge and erroneous readings on range, so maybe it is something else?
Press your start button once without touching the brake pedal.Acc. light will now illuminate on start button.Wait a few seconds and then press bottom of start button and hold for 10 to 15 seconds without touching brake pedal.Watch for gauges to start rising. You will then be able to shift to any gear you desire
I have the same fuel gage issue on my 2013 427, after fill up, gage now reads below "E", it then sets hard check engine light codes P0461 & P2066, which are fuel level sensor codes, anybody out there have this issue? what did it take to fix properly? Thanks, Jim Wallace
