Why bother fixing an alternator...they're cheap enough to just replace and be done with it. In fact, spending the extra $20 to get a lifetime replacement warranty from Autozone or similar is worth it. When it goes out...take it back and get a new one. Easy peasy.

Only problem to that, most of the auto parts store rebuilt are not rebuilt correctly (voltage regulators), and you go through a hand full until you find one that will not cause the car to throw charging system error codes.
Hence the C5's only use one voltage sensor wire, while the C6 uses two wires as the voltage sensing circuits (connectors are the same for both). So in the C5, the rebuilds work fine, but have problems in the C6 since the voltage regulator is not a two wire sensing unit. GM does offer the rebuilt units that are rebuilt correctly, but dam near the price of a brand new one instead.
As for his unit, don't see that is needs anything more than just cleaning up, and would be a no cost thing for him on that unit.
Slip rings look like they can still be cleaned up/still useable, Brushes look fine but would contact clean out the housing to make make sure they are not bind in the channels at higher RPM's.
As for the rest, basic cleaning with a little dielectric grease to make sure you have good connections across the board.
And if the coil winding plastic Cage was broken, would not be getting higher voltage even at lower RPM's. Same for bad grounding connection of the alternator to the bracket and motor.
Thanks Dano, the electrical gremlin was the alternator, I replaced it today and no more issue. I thought it was the alternator all along, but I never had one go out like this, the lights or something would always go dim and just leave me stranded.

I hate to say it, but that is what I did. After hearing all the bad reviews on Autozone alternator ,I bought one anyway. I had a $20 Rewards and my man hooked me up with another 10 percent on my whole order! I thought the same thing as you, Limited Lifetime Warranty, but I do prefer quality, unemployed right now, so every cent counts! 🤙😎🍻

my post had provided this solution based on my personal experience, hopefully it stays fixed

Yes it did Mad Max and I thank you all for your experience and input. As I mentioned before, I assumed that was the problem, but in my experience, I have never seen an alternator problem act the way mine did and I had my alternator checked and checked out good. With that said, for anyone else that goes through this problem and Autozone, Advance, etc., says your alternator is good, don't believe them. Mad Max, the alternator was the easiest solution to change out too! 🍻🤙😎

you are right, any other vehicle where my alternator was on it's way out it would start to charge less or start making a whining noise, I think the C6's computer catches an issue before it shows its ugly head!
similar to my experience and solution was replacing cable from battery to starter. Picked up increased resistance in cable due to internal corrosion in the cable. Replaced (along with starter) and no issues since.
Sorry stupid quote didn't work.... This is what I was replying to

I totally agree. Bring the hand tools into the parking lot with you and swap them until you find one that works. An alternator takes about 17 seconds to swap out. I can't say much though. I went with a custom, hand-built , high-end one. Crazy audio setup and all.
