Default Ash tray insert replacement...

Well, with the "stay at home" order still in effect here in Georgia, it has given me some serious shop time and stirred up some creative juices.
Here are some of my latest 3D printed parts. The iphone 8 holders is from a few months back, and the one completed this morning is an ash tray replacement insert that I designed to eliminate the cigarette perch to open up the cavity to hold small items.
I have posted it to Thingiverse for those who have a 3D printer and would like a small project to work on while most have more at-home time.
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4280617
I also gutted out the cigarette lighter and replaced it with a USB-A port which is tied into my Kenwood head unit for wired up Apple Car Play and charge.
The head unit mic is mounted on the left side.
I have the iphone 8 holder designed in Catia V5R27 if anyone wants the .CATParts to tweak to their phone size.
Thanks... Bill.

Yeah, to much time on your hand, but using for some good use, love that idea.

I also love your shifter ****, had one on my C4 Auto, back in the day.

I love the looks, stay home and safe, think some else to keep your mind off current events.

I washed my garage floor which I never did before, buffed out swirls and scratches, replaced a sun visor I bought 5 years ago, finally installed it.

Did lot of others things around the house to keep busy.

Stay Safe.

When I import the STL file into Simplify3D or TinkerCad it comes in super tiny. Seems like there is a scaling issue? Never seen this before in any other STL file I've worked with...

Scale it for mm. It is designed in inches.

Printing it now, at first it looks too large but I think it's correct after comparing the size to the original ashtray.

I found that printing it open mouth up with supports works best so I ended up with all visible areas having the best appearance. Unfortunately my resulting print won't "snap" into place like the factory part. It does go in fine and the door closes, but it is missing that snap for some reason. The little side tabs are present but maybe not defined enough or the fit just isn't right for me. Oh well, was worth a try and certainly a great idea, for me I don't want it rattling around as these C6 cars have enough rattles on their own.

Tweaked design geometry to get the two locking tangs to "click" into the rectangular cutouts on the sides.
Also, added rear groove to pocket (omitted in original design) that was preventing the locking tangs from "clicking" in place.

Cool deal. When I started modeling for 3D printing, it did not take me long to start doing everything in metric to avoid the conversion issues.

Sweet! Thank you for doing this!! My ashtray is missing, and they are expensive. I was wondering what I should do there. I'll print this this weekend on my Ender 3. I only have grey PLA right now, but if it prints well I'll do it again in black.

That PLA won't last in the summer if it gets warm in your area. It won't keep its integrity under heat.

Sorry to report I still have issues, the door won't open under its own power when the tray is inserted. The top of the tray is hitting the inside of the roof and the little spring opener gets hung up. I can feel it making contact when I open/close manually. Sorry to say another print in the trash. Thanks for effort though...

Richard

Agreed, rather than PLA I would recommend printing in ABS as it can better handle the heat.

Well, I think you need the 3D glasses to really get the effect.

R2 released on Thingaverse. Noted fowling condition and corrected.
Fit checked for functionality and all works fine on my ride.
Will print from ABS or PETG for the summer months coming.
Thanks for the feedback on this...
Bill.

Thank you! I've got a spool of black ABS on the way so once that arrives I'll try printing this latest version.

Regards,
Richard
