Default 2005 C6 Corvette diff Problems and Fixes

I know I'm beating a dead mule with weak 05 rear diffs... I also know I'm on limited time before it happens to me. I seen people convert C5z diff to a C6 rear cradle with special brackets. I'm hoping is there a better way. I like to install a C6Z diff. I'm sure there a few members on here that has done it. What all going to be needed for conversion, besides going through RPM.

Difference between auto and MN6 diffs. I had RPM build a Z06 diff. Oh..I just saw you didn't want to go through RPM so disregard.

Looked into these options a while back. A good used diff is somewhat hard to find. However, if you do find one and are keeping the existing trans it’s almost impossible to find the tail housing needed to make it work.

Manual GM part # 19132778
Auto GM part # 24238077

If you Google it’s likely you’ll find some showing in stock. I found a newer year C6 diff thinking this part would be available. Contacted every parts place stating in stock only to find out no one had it and won’t - no longer made.

Think RPM is the only option unless find trans + diff for sale. There are still a few details with the z06 if going that route. Believe rear axles replacement will be part of that effort as well. Maybe someone who’s done it will post to provide details.

Usually a Z06 diff does have the output shafts included. The mainshaft will have be replaced.

No. Unless you do burnouts the chances of carnage is reduced. Wheelhop or major traction from a dig is a deal breaker.

What do you use the car for and how much power are you currently putting to the wheel?

Again, it’s been a while. As I understand it the brace will only serve to offset the risk of the trans being taken out too in the event of catastrophic failure. It may be worth that piece of mind. Won’t save your diff though.

There are many with built 05’s on here that have driven them hard. Look up Joe_G, know he’s gone through a couple. Remember him sharing how hard he beat the first one before it actually did give out. His second gave out too as I recall, it wasn’t stock but what he replaced the stock with. He’d be a good source of insight. Drag races his 05 a lot from what I’ve seen posted.

Here’s some good insight. See post #42 for Joe’s original diff failure...

I ran my 05 auto car diff with drag radials for 11 years and never an issue with it.That diff was installed in another car last year and still going strong.I replaced it with a new GM Z06 diff when I supercharged the car

Did you change trans to or diff only?

I'm in the process of building a 480-510 hp engine. I blew my budget with the engine, so that why reaching out to get inexpensive route for rest of drive train.

The cheapest way is a C5 diff

I'm running just over 500 WHP SAE on NA setup (same dyno that baselined 340 WHP SAE factory prior to starting build) . It's a street car that sees quite a bit of mountain road hard acceleration out of curves and various pulls at WOT, but not actively doing burnouts. And like any street car most of it's time is spent in the +/- 2K RPM range. I do live in the foothills of E TN and back right up to "the dragon" and many roads people come from all over the country to drive. Car sees a lot of time on these roads with pretty aggressive driving. With new tires she puts the power down very well. Doesn't usually take but a few thousand miles though before the rear end can go to misbehaving on quick downshifts / hard acceleration. Bought tires last spring, starting to go to misbehaving a bit now.

Anyway, for my purposes punted and decided to stick it out with factory while keeping RPM in back of mind. Should something come available that makes sense would probably purchase though. Do keep an eye out.

YMMV depending on use.

You know of anyone that provides a mount for it? Have seen previous posts of people fabricating their own, and ECS made one years ago. I researched and couldn't find any and don't have the skills to fabricate one.

Any insight known / shared is greatly appreciated. TIA!

Off the top of my head I would think maybe member "subfloor" would be a good start.

So, what we are saying, the 19132778 tailhousing is nowhere to be found as a standalone purchase? Or do we think that RPM would sell this piece separately? I am halfway into the build, have the diff, now I am stuck... ughhh - SMH!!!

Didn't get as far as you when I ran into this problem. Did find low mile diff on ebay and purchased, then immediately went to purchase part. Google returned an "OEMcats.com" result showing available at 7 GM parts resellers (still gives that result). When began contacting to order, could not find part anywhere. Reached out to ZIP, they did not have either, but said working on a solution. Never tried RPM.

In my case, ebay seller understood as it all happened within a few hours. Never shipped and provided refund.

Think your only two options are ZIP (possible solution available now?), or RPM if they have / will sell that part individually.

Please let us know if you locate a resource to obtain. That housing is harder to find than a diff, at least per my experience.
