Default hood vent

So after only 3 days of measuring to make sure it was perfectly centered I bit the bullet and cut my hood to install a vent/heat extractor. Nerve racking.

Looks like you "measured twice & cut once"...

That's quite a commitment! Who makes that vent?

It’s a GM part. From a 14-15 Camaro. Also have the water tray I’m going to put in today to see if it fits..

That looks like a great mod. How did you determine how far back from the leading edge of the hood to put it?

Just laid the vent on to where is looked good. But I made sure not to go to high to cut the top hood support. There is no way around cutting the middle one. It is 8” from the top.

Few things are as quietly thrilling as chopping into a perfectly good very expensive part. Good on ya.

I felt the same way drilling out the bumpers front and rear, and side skirts. After the first couple holes meh no big deal....

Your work looks great I like the look, maybe a next project for me.....

Looks nice. It is nerve wracking to cut a nice hood!

Not sure the rain shield will fit. It will not fit with an LS7 and a F.A.S.T. intake. I had to notch the vent just ever so slightly with a dremel to get the hood to shut and that was with no water shield.

Just a note: make sure the vent is SECURELY fastened to your hood. There is a lot of pressure under it and a lot of air running across the top of it. If the vent is not VERY secure it *will* shoot straight into the air at speed, and can create a potentially dangerous situation for you and those behind you.

Thanks. I have been looking at the rain shield all day and I don’t think it will fit and really doesn’t want to start cutting into it as it will probably not function correctly and then what’s the point on installing it. Still figuring out the most secure way to lock down the vent so we will see.

Sorry no pictures. I am horrible about that. 19 years in the Air Force and I have like 5 pictures. But to answer you, I did a few things. First layer painters tape on the entire hood, measured along the sides of the hood at 12, 24, 36” from the top and marked on both sides, measured from point to point to get the center that way. I also used the Xmas antenna on the halo (I have an 05) got the center of that and lined it up with the marks I made on the hood to the center of the front emblem. Also ran a peace is string from the top corner of the hood to the bottom of the opposite site. Where they cross marked. Everything came out centered. Also did it a few times checking my work. I didn’t want to screw up the hood, but really like the style the vent gives.

How about a photo of the interior open hood, showing the installed vent from underneath???
