Automatics did not come from the factory with engine oil coolers, either in the rad or external. I believe the Z51 manuals switched from using the rad cooler to an external cooler at some point. Not sure if they ever used both at the same time. You can install an external OEM Z51 oil cooler on your A6 using all the OEM parts that the M6 uses. This includes either switching to the M6 rad shroud that has the openings for the cooler lines, or cutting the same opening in your existing shroud. I did this last year, electing to go with a new shroud. Everything bolts right up as it was designed to do. It's more than sufficient for street use. If you track your car, the cooler from a Z06 or ZR1 might be more to the point, but I wouldn't use it on the street. It would take way too long for oil temps to come up.

Where does it pick up the oil from the motor? I would think a Z06 or ZR1 would have a thermostat in line. If I put a oil cooler on I'd go aftermarket .

AFAIK there's no tstat on the Z06 or ZR1 coolers. The block has a mounting point near the oil filter where a fitting is attached for the oil lines. You can see a diagram here of the parts https://www.gmpartsonline.net/v-2011...em--oil-cooler
