Default Insect Inside Headlight Housing

I had the east coast Spotted Lanternfly die in my headlight housing and I've tried to get it out through the fender well by removing the bulb. Can't reach it and even tried to vacuum it out and still no good. Is there another access point that I can try? No big deal, but every time I walk pass the car I see the damn thing. Thanks for any help.

Mike

You might try blowing high pressure air through the bulb opening. It might blow it out of the hole. And if it doesn't, maybe it will break it up into a bunch of tiny little pieces.

Will give that a try, but still curious how it got in there. I assume the bulb sockets are sealed by the bulb plug so there must be a vent hole somewhere in the housing for condensation/water.

Thanks.

I'd combine the vacuum and the compressed air. With any luck the vacuum will pull the bug out once it gets knocked free by the air.

Or, take some small plastic tubing, hook it to the vacuum, and manouver the smaller hose to where it can reach the bug.

Also, you knew the species of bug? Lol

LOL. Yes, the Spotted Lanternfly is a popular nemesis here. Eats everything in sight. And tough as hell to kill (of course unless they get stuck in the headlight of a C6 - little bastard!). Will try your suggestion. Thanks.

Same thing has recently happened to me. Cleaning the car and I find a moth flying around the inside of my headlight...WTH! Especially when the OCD flares up each time you see it. It is now dead and laying in that same spot. My hope is to suck the little dude out with my PC vacuum kit. It has a snorkel adapter where I can insert a small plastic tube. Hopefully I can snake that through the high-beam bulb housing and suck it out. Now just just think about all the critters that climb up the A/C evaporator drain tube and die in that housing. That should keep you awake at night thinking about the smell or debris that shoots out of the vents when you turn on the A/C!

Stay sane.

Yup...OCD alright. I swore to myself I wouldn't screw with it, but I just can't stand seeing it there. What a PIA. Good luck with your. I'll try the vacuum.

I just finished refreshing a set of OEM headlights yesterday and after I got the new lenses on, sealed, and pulled the protective film off I noticed 1 small spec of lint or something inside the lens - argh!!

Spent about an hour with various tubing I had here and could not get it past the initial entry point. I think a very narrow, rigid piece of tubing may work (like the stiff water line tubing on a fridge dispenser). I also tried a plastic drinking straw and could not bend it around. As far as blowing or vacuuming the housing with air to move the bug around, I don't think that will work because of the gaps around the back of the housing. I don't think you can get enough air circulating in the housing. I'll give it another try this weekend.

Good luck.

I had the same thing happen to my Corvette a number of years ago. People offered similar suggestions. I hoped the damn insect would disintegrate. Every time I looked at my car, I immediately looked at the insect in the headlight. I couldn't stand it anymore and took it to the dealer. They got rid of the insect and commented that the seal around the headlight was bad. They repaired it. I don't regret spending the money. I hated that insect.

I got rid of my bug by blowing compressed air in the assembly. It moved it somewhere that it could not be seen,.

Good Luck

I took my headlight out and got it out. Easy to do. Just loosen the fender and bumper, then unbolt the headlight.

I used my shop vac and used the blow hole instead of the suck hole and created enough turbulence that the little bug came out the lamp socket. Good day for me!
