I’m picking up my new-to-me 2009 Z06 next week. It has the chrome spider wheels that I’d like to have powder coated like the ones pictured. I’ve learned having the chrome chemically removed will yield the best results. Has anyone had this done and how much did it cost? Thanks!
I have a Chevy Silverado with chrome 20's and the chrome is peeling. I checked with a few companies that do chrome work and they told me the chrome would need to be removed to be rechromed and it couldn't be removed without weakening the aluminum rim. Chemicals?? Don't know if they were just trying to get me off the phone or telling me the truth. I think your rims could be powder coated over the chrome. Maybe a light sand blast to get a surface for it to stick might be necessary. Powder coat company should know.
I’m not sure if a light soda blasting would be enough to get a long-lasting powder coat finish compared to going all the way down to the aluminum. I’ll keep researching my options…..
If the wheels are in good condition it would probably be better to just sell them and buy what you want.

My 82 year old father just bought a C7 and couldn't wait to get rid of those ***his words*** "ugly painted rims" and install a proper set of chrome rims... hahaha...

Old guys rule and often know best. Current trends and fads doesn't mean it's best for all.
I just received an email reply from a metal refinishing company here in the Denver area. They mentioned they could blast the wheels to prepare them for powder coating. They estimated $35 - $45 per wheel. I’m kind of an old guy (49) so I may just end up liking the chrome wheels!
After calls to several different powdercoating/wheel, chrome shops...even to rechrome, I finally had a set of lightly flaking Chrome rims on my Cayenne tow vehicle blasted and powder-coated.
My only option was to scrap them because they were so fugly, so I took a chance on CAD$500 ($350ish?)
That was 4 years ago and they've held up perfectly. I am very satisfied with the outcome.
Caveat...I do not use these wheels in winter, but nor did i use the flaking chrome ones in winter....but doubt you'd drive your Corvette in road salt either.
I guess it depends on the shop ...and who you speak to
