In the last 3700 miles Ive gotten the P0442 code 4 times. Evap, small leak. After the second time I replaced the gas cap. Code came back after 1000 miles or so. If its not the cap, where do I go next ?
You can make your own tester for very little money, if you work on your own cars it will be well worth the time and effort.
If this issue becomes a real problem I will look into getting a smoke tester. Seems to be a valve under the car at the canister and one at the passenger cylinder head. I will try to check them first.

The purge valve up front holds a vacuum so I guess thats not the problem. Watching the Cup cars race at Dover now, so it will be a while before I get under the car and look there. i also looked at the filler neck. Clean as new.I did notice the cap is completely different than the original. I put the original on and I will get another from the Chevy dealer.

check evap solenoid on right rear of car, easier to change if your car is a stick but not too bad if it's an auto. i had to loosen the exhaust and slide it back to get my hand up there. I also changed the spring clamp to a screw type clamp just because it was easier. you may also need a small wiring harness adapter for the new solenoid. this is an inexpensive ($15) part at rock auto & comes with the harness. do a search on this site for DIY fix for "loose gas cap " with pics showing how to do this. jack the car up, remove rr wheel and please use jack stands for safety. you can clear the code with an obd2. good luck, be safe!

Going under the back of the car is next. I just ordered the GM gas cap just to be sure thats not the problem.

I got under the car and looked. The solenoid looks to have been replaced . CEL comes on about once every 4 weeks. I hate to just buy random parts. The leak has to be very small so I am not sure a smoke tester would even find it.
P0442 & P0445. On my 2013 dealer replaced evap vent valve (part # 13575703) and gas cap (part # 15832215) under emission warranty. No problems since repairs were made back in 2019.

I replaced the cap with a cap from GM. No help. Maybe the solenoid that some one installed is bad ?? I can tell it has been replaced by the clamp marks on the hose. And it looks new. I guess I could throw parts at it and buy another one.
I got back under it and pushed the clamp farther up on the hose. Whoever had been there previously did not get it all the way on. Maybe it was leaking there.
So how is the P0442 code coming along? My CEL came on today and I have the same code. Wondering if you pushing the clamp farther up solved your issue? I may have to replace the solenoid vent valve thingy. Although I did check the gas cap and it does appear to be on the loose side. The filler neck was clean, but the cap gasket, which is green I believe, had some build up on it.

Well, its been over 2 weeks and I have run the tanks pretty low a couple times with no CEL. It always came on at less than 1/2 full. I was going to give it a couple more weeks and if it was still good post a success. Since you asked, so far , so good. I really hope it is fixed because I hate just buying parts and hoping I guess right.

I’m with you. I hope it was just that clamp. My tank is less than half full too. Interesting. Thanks for the update.
