Default C7 or C6

I've had my C6 for 5 years. It's been bullet proof. I've been thinking about the move to C7 will I be disappointed or very happy. I've done some mods to my C6 and it's done as far as I'm concerned. It would need to be a Grand Sport 3LT A8. Last what issues that I'll run into with C7 that C6 does not ? Thanks in advance

Should you be asking this in the C7 forum?

Or you could just re-read the thread that you had from last year. Not much has changed in the C6 or C7 since 2021.

Should I move to a C7 - CorvetteForum - Chevrolet Corvette Forum Discussion

You're welcome in advance.

I'm in the same position. Had our 02 C5 coupe for 5 years, cost me $5k to move into a 06 C6 vert. Just added a new head unit, wind restrictor, powder coated calipers. At 4 year old we're considering a C7 vert. Trying to get something similar to what we have is going to run us $30k+. We decided to hold tight for awhile.

Good luck with your decision...

You will get more biased opinions in the C6 section just as you will in the C7 section. For me personally the C6 is the best looking vette ever produced. Like all cars it is a personal choice on what some like and others dislike. Drive what you like and like what you drive.

I went from a '13 GS (6spd, 4LT, mag ride, NPP) to a '15 Stingray (7spd, 3LT, Z51, mag ride, NPP, competition seats), then back to a '12 ZR1 (3ZR). It really depends on what you want out of the car. My '13 GS I drove daily for about 2 years, then converted it to a daily on nice (non-rainy) days only (which in TX is a lot). The car was stock for the first year, then 600whp with blower for a year, then 675whp for the rest of its time. Drove it on many long trips, and absolutely loved it. Got rid of it to do another C4 ZR-1, which was definitely not a daily driver, and decided to get the C7 to have a reliable Corvette for fun and used it as a daily driver for 2 years. The C7 is more refined than the C6 and a significantly better daily driver with its extra amenities (heated & cooled seats, infotainment system) and improved weather mode traction control. The car was a lot of fun and again I took it on multiple long trips. I was debating getting rid of it because for me it was a little too refined (i.e. not quite as raw/analog as the C6), so when my buddy offered me his Carlisle Blue ZR1, I made the jump back. The only things I missed from the C7 were the stereo, seats, and rev-match function. I addressed the seats shortly after buying the ZR1 by swapping in a great set of Caravaggio seats, then I put in a nice JVC head unit with wireless AndroidAuto/Carplay (which is better than the C7 setup). After driving the ZR1 for a few months, I didn't miss the rev-match function anymore as I was back to doing it myself, which while I'm not perfect every time like the computer is, it's more fun (back to that raw/analog feel I was missing in the C7).

Ultimately you have to decide for yourself, but a few things to think about:
Is this a daily driver of just a fun weekend cruiser? From your signature, I'm assuming weekend cruiser. If so both C6 and C7 are going to function very well for you, but there's not nearly as big a difference for that use case. Also, I'd rethink getting locked in on only considering a C7 Grand Sport. If you're not tracking it, there's really not a lot of benefit other than widebody look and bragging rights. For me, I ended up with the Stingray because I like the looks better (especially with the Z06 grill & side vents like mine had, the plastic fender extensions on the widebody C7s just look odd to me). The Stingray is a very capable platform (especially with Z51) and doesn't have nearly as many issues with wheels cracking as the C7 GS/Z06 (which is a major issue on the widebody C7s). I would definitely advise that if you are doing a C7, you want at least 2LT, and I'd definitely spring for mag ride, NPP and Z51.

Nothing wrong with wanting a change. If you're that tired of your C6 then do it. I wasn't a fan of the C7 but it seems to have grown on me since the C8 came out. Still, neither the C7 or C8 looks as good to me as a nicely modded C6.

another thing to factory is the "ease to mod" factor... if your a DIY guy and you want to mod the car, I personally would stick to a C6... Not saying the C7s arent just as awesome modded, but they come with a whole new basket of hurdles to do so. In my opinion (and im sure alot would disagree but) the C6 is really the last true DIY buildable Corvette. They took the simplicity out of the design when they went to the C7 platform and your average guy with average tools will have a much harder time working on it himself than he would with a c6. Not saying its impossible but its a whole other animal. Just some food for thought.

Another factor to consider is the interior size, if your a taller/bigger guy the C7 is a little bit of a tighter fit than the C6.

People have had problems with the A8 in the C7 and many other GM models. Even if I could get past that hideous rear end I still don’t want my car with cylinder deactivation and direct injection. Many GM SUVs have lifter failure from the stupid deactivation around 60k miles. I’ll stick with the bulletproof LS engine and reliable 6spd auto.

Hard to not scream c6 from the rooftops here in the c6 section but..... C7 is great but value per dollar, you just cant get better than a c6, the amount of performance out of these things for the price tag is truly amazing. To put it in numbers, (and this is IMO) C7 maybe 15% "better" but you are looking at 30% increased price tag initially and in maintenance.

Just my 2 cents.

I currently have a C6 Grand Sport and love it. Personally, I think the C6 is much better looking than the C7; C6 has a timeless design that has aged very well. C6 is perfect balance of refinement and rawness. LS engine is tried and true and the LS3 in particular is nearly bullet-proof and can be modded extensively and relatively easily.

The C7 on the other hand does have some advantages and also some disadvantages. It does have newer styling but I'm not a big fan. It does have a nicer interior for sure but I have found it to be a bit more cramped.

One thing for sure to be aware of on C7 GS's and Z06's is the high incidence of bent, broken, and cracked wheels. It really is a major failure on GM's part in this regard and they should have issued a recall for the wheels.

C7's with the A8 auto have had some problems and so have Camaro's with the A8. But this has been largely resolved by a transmission flush and switch to a different spec of trans fluid. Some people have had to have the torque converter replaced but this and the trans flush is 100% covered by GM if your car has that problem. (I have a 2017 Camaro SS with the A8 and a TCM software update as well as fluid flush has solved all the problems with the trans.). Now the A8 (and A10) transmission in the C7 and 6th gen Camaro are freaking amazing. Probably one of the fasted shifting torque converted transmissions there is out there.

Another C7 positive is its engine, the LT1. It is a 6.2L 5th gen engine. It is pretty much better in every way compared to the LS3. It really is that good. It is direct injected but unlike most DI cars, GM did a fantastic job with the PCV system so you really don't ever need to worry about buildup on the back of the intake valves. And the LT1 responds to simple mods even better than the LS3. Because of the higher compression ration and DI of the LT1, a simple Flex Fuel sensor kit, e85, and tune will add 30+ hp easy. Adding long tube headers to the LT1 is basically like adding a cam to the LS3; the HP/TQ gains especially above 5K rpms is extremely impressive.

Check out a youtube channel called C&S Corvettes there is a great video talking about which C7s to look at and potiential issues with them. If I got a C7 I would likely spend the money to have
the DOD system removed (been told you can't simply tune it out) and stick with a manual or a 14 which retails the C6s A6 since the early A8s had issues, I think the A8 problems were resolved
in 17 or 18. I love the exterior styling but don't care for the interior. I also heard there was an issue with the MyLink (radio) in the 14 as well?

I love the rev matching on the M7 and kinda liked the interior looks. That's about the only love I have for them. They don't do it for me in the outside looks dept. I'm a wide shouldered 6' and 225#. I felt cramped in the C7's cockpit. That and I re-fall in love with my C6 every time I drive it. It has suspension upgrades and a well-mannered and efficient 500 rwhp. I scratched a check for it when I bought it and all mods paid as done. I could scratch a check for a C7, but don't see the point.

A couple people have said it but the rev matching on the C7 is intoxicating. On my list of mods is the Xineering auto-blip. I think the interior is much more modern and feels like a newer car where the C6 is definitely dated.

I've asked myself that question a lot lately. I love the C7 and have thought about upgrading. But in order to get into a C7 GS comparable to my C6 GS, I'd be out 25-30k above my car's value. Is the C7 25-30k better than my C6? That's a tough question to answer depending on what you're looking for. And if I'm willing to spend that much money, there's around 15k difference between the C7 GS I'd want, or an early C7 Z06, or a C8. It's all about what you value in the car and how much money it's worth to you.
