Default Key Programming

Hi there -- I have four key Fobs for my 05 C6; one of them currently works. The others don't appear to be programmed yet. I have seen videos -- and in my owners manual how to program a new one; When I start this process can I add a single FOB without messing with the one that currently works?

Thanks!

You can program up to four fobs so as long as you don't have that many programmed you can add another one without affecting the one that's already programmed.

A little added info. on that process. There are 2 different programming options, one adds the current fob to the list of programmed ones. However, if there are already one or more fobs programmed for that car, it just adds that fob as the next number, up to and including the number 4. So, if the current working fob that you have is programmed as no. 3, you can only add 1 more fob and it will be programmed as no. 4.

Biggest point: it will only program 4 fob numbers, as fob nos. 1 thru 4.

So, if the fob you already have is not programmed as no. 1, it would be better to use the long process and reprogram all the fobs you want to use. That way, any fobs that were already programmed for your car will automatically be canceled. The number engraved on the fob means nothing, it's what number it was programmed to the car as.

Unless you know the 3 fobs are not paired to the car, and since you don’t state if you tried new batteries in the 3 fobs that don’t work, I’d suggest first seeing if any of them are already programmed by trying them one at a time in the glovebox slot. Use your good fob to open the driver’s door, leave it open, and then put the good fob well away from the car, like back in the house. Now you can try to start the car using the slot trick with the other fobs. Try this even if you put new batteries in those fobs. Replacing fob batteries is usually easier than reprogramming from scratch.

Good advice above from FatsWaller. And if you end up doing the long procedure, do it in the parking lot of your nearest Chevy dealer (as Bill Dearborn or somebody has suggested). That way if you f*** it up and end up with no working fobs, help is close by.
