Default C6 Component of Unknown Function

I'm new to my C6 Corvette, so please be gentle.

What in the heck is this gosh-durn thing? There are four of them in the engine bay. It's like a low, round cylinder with a springy metal frog-shaped thing that seemingly can be removed, but I don't want to do that without knowing what it is! As far as I know it could be the 4 lynchpins that holds the whole car together!

Location of one of the four gizmos.

Close-up. There are numbers stamped into the part.

I just tried to take one apart. The clip comes off. But the piece underneath will not. It seems like some kind of ceramic rock.
I can not see it inside of the frame. It looks like they are welded in.

You being new to C6s, probably not wise to start trying to pry parts off your car.

Mine has those new from the factory and I have never once thought that my car would be better off without them.

I never even noticed them before, and I'm on my fourth C6.

My guess would be suspension related. I'll take a look at the service manuals.

Aw yes, the infamous, and often feared springy metal frog-shaped things, I have no idea. Where's @Dano523 when you need him ?

I was close. It's a crossmember bolt:

My guess the clip is there so the bolt remains in place during the assembly process. Kind of like the stud clips to keep the rotors on.

Exactly. I've dropped my own engine before on my 2008 Z06, and, of course, the bolts didn't move when I re-installed the crossmember, so that's exactly what they're for - keeping the bolts in place so you can stab the crossmember back on the bolts.

I have had those bolts loose many of times. I never thought to look at the other side. I never had one spin on me. Now I know why.

The only stupid question is the one you didn't ask. Enjoy the car!

I had no intent of prying them off. I try not to mess with something if I don't know what it does. I work on my own cars and with that goal in mind I like to understand my cars thoroughly. I wouldn't generally pay these sorts of items much attention, but these metal engine-bay frogs are so odd to me.

Helm Inc sells the service manuals. About $300 for the set of, I believe, 4 books. Just type in your car and year in the link provided.

My apologies.....I must have misunderstood this comment....

This forum is the best place to find answers on your car. I also work on my own cars and have saved big time and big bucks finding answers on here.

No problem! I have this set that I bought when I had my 2010 ZR1. I had the 2008 set when I had my 2008 Z06. I was contemplating getting the 2011 set to go with my 2011 Grand Sport, but so far they don’t appear to be that much different except the USB plugs in the center console.
