Good info, but Ed replaced the t-stat last year. The sensor is way easier to check out with a multimeter first. Even if it doesn’t show an open or short, Ed reported the problem to be intermittent, which is very possible with this type of sensor. Replacing it is easy, inexpensive, and low risk compared to the t-stat.

I replaced the temp sensor this past Saturday, and so far everything is working as it should. Only $20 and 10 minutes of my time to fix. Funny thing is the service manual says you have to pull the alternator to get to the sensor, but simply disconnecting the plug wire #1 from the ignition coil gives more than enough room to get a 3/4" deep well socket on the sensor and remove it easily.
