The Shifter in my 2005 C6 stopped working. It was fine until I came home. Pulled in the driveway and went to put it in park. The shifter just moved with no resistance at all. I turned the motor off, When I tried to put it into park the shift lever just moved up and down with no resistance at all. It wouldn't start and when I attempted to turn the ignition off it wouldn't shut off. Had to disconnect the battery to get the ignition off.
Does anyone know what is wrong with my baby? I think it may be the shifter cable. Seems like I had to replace it about 4 years ago for the same reason.
Shifter cable is probably fine. The plastic grommets at each end of the cable are a common problem. They get brittle and snap. There is one under your console at the bottom of the shifter and another at the trans. If you are able to work on your own car, pretty easy to replace them at home. Parts are around $10.00. If you take it to a mechanic, they will replace the entire cable. New cable is around $50 but the labor will push the cost to around $500
Very common problem with all C6 automatics
I second the plastic grommet. This happened in my C5 once. Pulled into car wash, put car in park. When it was time to pull out, shifter was totally limp. Eeeek! Easy fix though.
Thanks. I am having it fixed tomorrow. As I had a stroke about a year and a half ago I am unable to do the work now.
From what I have seen here and from my own experience, those bushings seem to break apart after 10 years or so. After tomorrow, you should be covered for quite a while.
