I have 2 issues with opening the hatch of my 2006 which I bought new in 2006. First, the hatch button has stopped working. I purchased a GM replacement button and installed it but it still does not work. FOB and inside buttons do open the hatch. What is my next step?
Second issue is that the hatch key does not work. The key turns to the right (clock wise) about 1/8 of a turn but does not open the hatch. What is the best way to analyze this problem?

try some penetrating oil on the key and try to work it in. That may help unfreeze the lock. Or spray it in the keyhole.
First, make sure the key inserts all the way and the licence plate frame doesn’t interfere with its insertion or rotation.
Second, you’re correct that the key is supposed to turn clockwise, and that’s relative to the face of the keyhole. Since the key is inserted from underneath that can be confusing to some.
Third, use the fob or dash button to open the hatch first because this will lessen the amount of force needed to turn the key.
Has for the Truck Buttons you might want to revolve it through removing the right inside light, and stick your hand down unclip wire and squeeze the switch and pull it through.
You find a rubber cover you can peel back and I bet if it was like mind full of sand, I cleaned it out, and reinstalled it, and been working great now for years.

OP stated he replaced the hatch button in the first post. Best bet it’s a wiring issue, so I’ve attached a diagram which might help.

Thanks for the help, I got the key to work. I sprayed some lubricant into the keyhole. Still could only turn the key about 1/8 or a turn. I opened the hatch with the FOB to remove the pressure on the latch and was able to turn the key about 90 degrees. I worked it a few times and then closed the hatch. The key now easily popped open the hatch.
