Default Traction Control question

I have a 2005 Corvette with the 6-speed manual. Generally speaking the car is always in "Performance Driving" mode, since, well, it sounds cooler, and I learned to drive long before all the technology was available. I sort of want the car to tell me if I am being stupider than normal.

If I accelerate sportingly, I will often, but not always, get the warning chimes and the DTC will light up with "Service Traction System" and the amber icon for the Traction Control system will come on. There is typically no waggle of the back end when this happens, so I am not exceeding the grip of the tires, If I press the driving mode button, it will cycle between Active Handling On, and Performance Driving; there is no option for Traction Control. If I shut down and restart, then all of the handling options are available again when I cycle through. My question is, how concerned should I be? It seems more like a false positive to me. The other question would be, is this a dealer only issue or can it be handled by an independent shop that specializes in Corvette work.

Need to check for codes that could help identify the intermittent problem. Might be a failing wheel speed sensor and a code could help to locate the wheel.

Let us know what you find...GD

I found that I had the intermittent "service active handling system" and it would not read any codes on a reader. I looked at the electrical connections in the passenger footwell, and just made sure that they were all seated properly. Voila, seemed to have "cured" the problem, however, my car is a 2007. It's worth giving it a try though. Good luck and keep us informed of what solves the problem.

I had a similar problem in my '05. Only difference is that I only had a couple of TC mode options, even when freshly started. Changed out the TC button and it fixed my problem.

I will need to upgrade my ODB reader for this. The one I currently have only returns engine codes. It has been on my radar, perhaps this is the time to pull the trigger.

I was thinking it might be an electrical issue. I will take a look at that. I need to check as the cigarette lighter has no power, though since I am looking to replace the head unit, I was probably going to pull that and run a USB/Aux cord from that location.

I cannot read any codes for Traction Control, but that is a limitation of my ODB reader. Probably need to upgrade that.

Well, I got a better ODB reader, hooked it up and then went out to generate the error with a bit of sporty acceleration. Unfortunately, the condition is easily reproduced.
DIC reported "Service Traction Control" and the light came on. Results of the ODB scan were:

...so it would seem to me that it is an electrical issue involving the BCM and the connections to it, since there seems to be a lot of "missed" communication. It is interesting that almost everything involved is internal to the passenger compartment. The only code that would seem to be related to the TCS is the ABS code.
The steering column lock was serviced as per a Technical Bulletin specific to the 2005 model year. I did not notice any issue with the HUD during this process.
My guess is that this involves the grounds in the passenger compartment and the large blue multipin connectors to the BCM in the footwell, since the ECBM can report this error if it cannot communicate with the BCM and it seems the BCM is having a failure to communicate. Does anyone know how to release the locking levers on those connectors? I did not want to get overly aggressive as I am not sure replacement parts are so available.
I just replaced the battery (it was five years old and swelling) and cleaned the ground points in the engine compartment, which perhaps will help. There is a Service Bulletin for 2005-2007 models regarding new software for the ECBM. specifically to resolve a C0561-71 issue. I will look into that as well.

My '05 had intermittent Traction Control issues. After countless hours I found that the ground wire from the Traction Control Module (Behind the RF wheel well) had an intermittent connection at the ground terminal under the battery. The wire was there, the terminal was there but the wire was not making a good connection with the terminal. I soldered a wire to the ground wire and ran it to the ground stud with a single terminal. No problems since. YMMV.

It looks like ALL of your DTC’s are “History” so I’d clear ALL those DTC’s and see what comes back on your next key cycle…check for DTC’s before you shut the car off…your C0561 is just an “informational” trouble code so I wouldn’t worry about it right now.

I checked both the grounds under the battery, cleaned and sanded them. Cleared the codes and then repeated the process that has thrown the "Service Traction System" and...no more problem. One of the terminals did appear to have a dodgy connection to the wire, and it had previously been taped. If the problem reappears, I will take that apart and redo it as per your suggestion. Thanks.

Thanks.
I did clear the codes and took a run today. When I repeated the steps to reproduce the error, I did not get it. A scan at the end of the drive showed no codes...and there was much rejoicing.
I would still love to know how to undo the clamps on the blue connectors to the BDC, but that can wait for now.
