When I had the Lotus Elan, back in the day, I drove it barefooted for same reason... Little bitty British foot well.

Likely not it... but check to see if PO put a throttle booster on the car.
I added a name brand one to my Grand Cherokee and the throttle stuck open and almost put me through a brick wall.
Must be why I got it used so cheap on eBay.
