In model year 2008 GM switched to the newer style fob with the bayonet key. Maybe there was a transition period where the owner’s manual wasn’t quite in sync. Either fob type is compatible with any year of C6. The physical keys are problematic because the later key blanks are not quite as wide as the older keys, so it may not be possible to cut the older key code into a newer key because there isn’t enough width for the depth of cut. There’s a write up if you can find it explaining whether it will work or not based on the key code.
I don't really care all that much about the original key FOB (pic 1). Looks like the early C6 has potential problems with new style key - not to mention the cost... Was mainly curious... as it looks similar to the C5 key FOB. (had a C5 till l got the C6) Wonder why GM changed design? May be they wanted to just update the looks of it.
In 17 years and 110,000 miles, I have only used my Fob 1 with the other stored inside the car all that time for lockouts. So the old style (pic 1) fobs are reliable.
I would imagine Chevy changed the style so they could add the integral spare key....like the Caddy's had.
