That's very interesting. I never would have thought that popups would impact aerodynamics when they weren't popped up. I guess I stand corrected.
I could see it making a big difference with the bigger panel gaps and all. I remember reading an old article where they tried making a 200 mph fox body Mustang. One of the steps they used to improve the aerodynamics was taping the seams. I think it got them nearly 10 mph on the top end.

You know everyone says that the aftermarket will come out with pop-up kits the same way they came out with fixed headlight kits for the C5. Does anyone stop to consider that it might not be possible? When was the last time you saw a kit converting ANY car to pop-ups? Popups take a bit of room under the skin. You have to fit the motor and the mechanism to move the lights as well as the entire light and lense. All of that has to fit under a body panel. Given the shortened front end of the car, I wouldn't be surprised if there's no room at all. It's much much easier to go from pop ups to fixed lights. I honestly wonder if anyone will bother going the other way. So many people boldy announce that it will happen, but I have to wonder if they took any time to actually THINK about what they are proposing.
With enough $, you can do anything you want.

hi guys, i've been thinking of different modifications to current C5 and C4 lights. here is my ideas.

C5 and C4 idea: instead of a pop up why not have the body colored panel simply drop a 1/4 of a inch and slide back into the body showing a fixed headlight underneath? that way no problem with areo-dynamics and you still have the good looks of the cover.

C6 idea: possible two piece clear lense light with a flexible plastic thats the body color. when you want the lights on, the plastic slides up into the body (the whole time its between two clear faces of the light.) that way you don't have pop ups, the flexible plastic is still shinny like the painted body(due to the clear top layer of the light). basically give the C6 a eye lid thats inclosed by a clear light lense.

both systems would be a simple electric motor with a round gear and a flat toothed strip on the cover. :chevy if anyone needs some tech drawings i wouldn't mind. GM needs me lol

I doubt you were serious, but if you were, it's an idea that won't work well. Think about what'll happen during mountain drives during which HUGE bugs pile up on the lights, and then you try closing the lid! I see a horrible mess, and possibly severe damage to the lens, lid, and motor...not to mention the bruise on your forehead from smacking yourself upside the head for doing it...again.

I think you missed his point - the moveable cover would be BETWEEN two layers of lens, so the outside lens never moves at all. The cover would be sealed from the elements. Sounds intriguing to me.

Although I agree with most of what you say, I'll bet the house someone will try. Surely Mike Yeager (Mid Am) and his peers read these forums occasionally. Check out how many hits and posts there were on that thread (I thought it would never die!!!) admonishing fixed HL and praising popups.

Even if successful, the conversion performance price will likely be high. They will need to loose the "delicate" HID in favor of Halogen, they will add weight out in front of the front axle. Might require so much fender room as to prohibit the possiblity of lowering the car. All this said, someone will make it, some will install it. NOT ME. I love the look the way it is.

exactly my point, the moving part is covered. the cover could be flexable (probably would have to be on a C6) and there for could take up less space. and don't tell me it would weigh alot either. its one tiny electric motor, double piece of lense, and a thin piece of body color plastic. :D
