OK, here's another twist to think about. I would appreciate feedback on this. I have seen some screenshots of the NAV in the CD / Radio mode, and I am not too sure if I like this "Look". It seems kinda funky to me.

Any comments?
It's OK there are 4 color schemes you can use, the icons display the name of the XM station, they are big, easy to read and to touch.
After getting used to it, I like it much better than trying to remember which hard buttons are programmed to what.
Great technology! Have you explored the "refold" feature yet?
No, but I think that the subject will be covered in my next life. But in this liife the road atlas (even though I haven't figured out how to fold it up) works just fine. Made a 5300 mile trip back in April covering Ok, TX, NM, AZ, UT, and CO and never got lost, never missed a meal, never missed a night of sleep in a motel. Boy, was I lucky.
Go punch in "Outback Steakhouse" and see if that road atlas will take your there. Or a car wash, italian restaurant, gas station, etc. Better yet, punch in the phone # of a business and see if it guides you there, turn by turn. Yet another C5 owner hanging on desperately to Pop-up headlight technology.
Nothing to do with C5 vs C6. I also have three other autos and none have NAV. I normally drive my Buick on trips and I can transfer my old fashion road map between cars without destroying the dash doing so. next week I've got to run up to Wheaton, IL. I checked my map in the convenience of my study, checked location of motels using my PC in the convenience of my study and made motel reservations using my PC in the convenience of my study. I will not be driving around looking for a motel that may or may not have a vacancy after driving all day. I know exactly where I will be spending the night and have guaranteed reservations in the event I'm running late and I know exactly where the motel is located---all before I leave home. The NAV sounds like a neat little toy to occupy your time, but is is not reqired in order to drive a car.

The NAV will not make reservations, that is not the point I was trying to make. I make reservations before I leave, I just have problems finding places. When you get there you always need to go somewhere to eat etc. Lets face it a road map is about 1/10th as useful as a NAV. AND it is a cool toy, and it looks great to boot. Don't take the C5 comment wrong, I was trying to say was the Pop up headlight technology was as yesterday as a fold up map. One could throw that Pioneer unit in a C-anything and be good to go. My SS Silverado is getting one I love them so much.

Hey Ted, we're making headway. We actually agreed on several points.

Where did you see those screen shots? Do you have a URL?

So far I have seen arguements from both sides, and it seems that the ones who has never had a nav don't miss it, and the ones who have had one in their other cars already can't live without it. I have one in my Honda Pilot, and I will NEVER be caught dead without one on another car I buy. It's like cell phone and the internet. Once exposed, you will never know how you lived without it. YES, the nav is THAT useful. It's not a toy.
We have one in my wife's Magnum RT Hemi. We have found it to be a Great Tool. Have used it many times-would not be with out one. I have ordered it in my C6 vert.

I have navigation in my XLR...I'm sure the C6 will be the same. I can't imagine being without it...I now have a new woman after 27 years giving me directions....When I get tired of them both, I plug in a DVD movie..Not that I watch while driving..But I can follow along with the dialogue.
Not even close to the same unit. The one in the C6 is junk. I will not do DVD or DVD music.
I have proof that the road database in the brand new C6 units is a minimum of 4 years old and I think it is 6 years old.
NavTec supplies the maping and ther is not an update available yet for any car using it from 1999 to present.
POI's are current ... but I don't need to nav. to a hamburger.
It doesn't boot off of the DVD. Eject the DVD and cycle ignition and you will see for yourself. Update can be made but it depends if GM will supply them. I'm sure if the US develops a system like Japan's 'VICS' then GM will update their navigation systems.
Sorry, but .....
The C6 nav system (ie. GM) is made in Japan by DESCO and it uses the same format they use (KWI).
I think you may have mis-understood Jay's post. He was referring to the electronics and processing capability of the Nav system, not the maps themselves. Assuming Moore's Law holds up for the computerized Nav systems, as well as it has for other computers, in four and a half years, it would predict the new nav systems then would have eight times the processing power. That means faster and better mapping, better voice recognition, better and faster rerouting. I'm going to go out on a limb, and predict by that time, it will be integrated with XM's TravNav (real time traffic mapping already in the Acura), and automatically reroute you around heavy traffic.
Here's a question for people in the know on nav systems. Do any of the automobile manufacturer map update disks also upgrade the software programming?
Michael
NO ... and no road updates available for this system since 1999 according to NavTec's site.
