The DMV knows what the car is worth, and will charge accordingly. Think about over the life of a car if sold and resold, how much tax revenue is generated. Sucks.
I am pretty CERTAIN that I will do all that I can in my power to avoid EVER having to live in California. You guys can have it.

Basically what the original poster was suggesting is a tax dodge that is prevalent with high dollar vehicles. If you buy a vehicle out of state and register it out of state, then wait 90 days or more and re-register it in California - you will avoid the sales tax provision.

In order for this to be cost effective, you need to buy in a state with no sales tax. Something like Oregon or Montana, come to mind. You have to pay for license and registration from that state. It costs around $250 to register a car in Montana for example.

Here's your problem. First, it's illegal if you're caught. California has been cracking down recently because of our deficit. Arnold needs the money. You will be driving around with out of state plates and a California license and address. If you get stopped by the police for anything, your scheme could come to light.

You have to determine whether or not the savings is worth the penalty if discovered. For me, I'm just going to pony up the money and support California. Believe me, I'd rather not but life is to short to sweat this stuff.

There is a hot-line in California to report vehicles with out of state plates. I would advise against trying it in the present political/economic climate.

Why would you????

Cost of a small 3 bedroom home in So. Calif. is about $600,000 or more.

The Bay Area around San Francisco is often higher. Midstate, the central valley is over $500,000

The more likely danger for beautiful S.C. is not hurricanes, but, Californians looking for real estate bargains driving prices up like we did in Washington state, Oregon, Colorado, Arizona, and Nevada.

Sounds like it is not possible to get by the sales tax however here is another way that might be possible for us in CA. I have a brother living in Los Angeles area which is .5% less than San Francisco sales tax therefore I was thinking about registering the car using his address and then have him forward all the mail to me. Then after a year or so, I just put in a change of address with the DMV. Since the tag is CA, there should be no real problems and I can save a tiny amount of money. Any thoughts on this?

Seems like a lot of trouble for a half point...

Could you commute from a neighboring state for a short time?

Apparently continue running the place in the fine manner in which you have been running it without me all these years up to now!

Carry on!

No ... not really.

But I did take my 69 Ford P/U after I got out of the marines and headed north with a buddy. We ran out of gas and money when we hit the Yukon River in Alaska. Ran out of road too.

Stayed there 34 years .... retired down here to the civilized world.

Oh ... forgot. NO TAXES in Alaska! (except property) no sales, use or income tax.

There's a forum member out there who will have been shifting his by matching the tranny revs so as to avoid clutch wear. Get his, and not only will you save a bundle but you'll get one with a perfect clutch!

Yep - you get caught, it is teh suck - happened to a guy I worked with a while back. He moved here from Colorado, but never "bothered" to change his vehicle registration. After about three years, he got caught - I think it was a parking ticket that highlighted the discrepancy between his vehicle license plate and his CA driver license address. Cost him about $4K in fines and back fees, and there was no sales tax involved because he already owned the car when he moved out here.

Taxes? Don't they PAY YOU to live there?

Alaska is a great state, just too far removed for me.

Might be a good retirement state!

I always love when the rich guys turn snobbish on the rest of us. I think the point is that the Corvette might BE WITHIN THE MEANS of some folks here, if some states didn't tax the bejeezus out of them.

SC has a sales tax cap of $300. They get us back with an onerous property tax though, I pay a little under a grand a year in taxes on my C5.

If you turn them often, you come out ahead - on paper anyway.

Most states play a shell game too - some don't have property taxes on anything except real estate, other have income taxes but low property taxes. Some don't have income tax but have higher property taxes. Some have high sales taxes.

But Cali has them all!!!

If so, your scheme will work. The Calif. State Board of Equalization is full of which is pure communism to me down with the government. They will not collect the sales tax, late fees, there is no penalty for negligence, and late DMV fees.

You have to be able to prove yourself maybe offer them a little more $$$$$ or whatever it takes and a move into the State. Otherwise, the above applies.
