And why stopped during the middle of the production year?
It wasn't.
It was killed prior to production. The cars that had their orders in for that color were produced, but shortly before production started, no more orders were being accepted for that color.
In short, all the PR cars were pre-ordered before production began.
In support of PR, I have seen quite a few various makes of '05 models that are a darker shade of red. They look great, especially in the sun. Could be the "in" color right now.
However, I do think that there is some merit to the comments made about how it looks in artificial light. Here's a PR convertible GM was using for dealer training:

Still doesn't look lifeless. Maybe LEXUS430 was right.

:sigh
I knew I shoulda steered clear of this one
I didn't say it was lifeless, you had implied in an earlier post that PR looks different in the sun than it does in artificial light. I've heard this a few times before, so I assume it is nothing new. Pictures don't always come across the same as seeing the color in person, but as I looked at the PR vert under the flourescent lights it did look different than the PR cars that were outside in the sun.

Vetracer,
I wasn't saying you called it lifeless - I was talking about the original post in this thread. I agree it looks different in artificial light. I just meant that even in the indoor picture you had, I wouldn't call it lifeless. I have no problem with your description of it.
Corvette Poor...............Let me know when you want to sell yours for $30,000.00.....look no further..............owner of 1 PR already. Just let me know

Actually, not quite...I ordered mine July 20, 2004...slightly after production began.
Gonna try and create something worthwhile out of this thread -
When I picked up my car I went to the parts dept and wanted to get some touch-up paint. He looked and looked and found none listed. Indeed, if memory serves, he said it had been discontinued, just like the "real" color! I was looking over his shoulder and noticed that ANOTHER color had the 27U designation!
Subsequent searching found an after market Automotive Paint supplier that had a GM No. 27(no "U") listed! It was not designated PR but rather COBALT RED!(Which matched the GM # that the parts dude had found!)
Take this FWIW.....but ifn' ya'll need to touch up a chip or two.....
Precision Red was my #1 choice.
However, I took what the dealer had, which was Black (luckily this is my 2nd)
I'll always think Precision Red is the best color for the 'Vette.
It's a dark, deep, and good looking red that does not rely on metallic flakes to get its point across.

Was it Dupli Color? I need to get some. Thanks for the info.
Don't be a hater. What happened? You missed out on the chance to be one of the few lucky people to own a pr. I had a mag red on order and gave it up to buy the pr. I have owned just about every modern day exotic car and my pr c6 gets more looks and comment than any vehicle I have ever had the prevlidge of owning.
Precision Red is a great color on the car. I ordered Mag Red but was drawn to P-Red when making the choice at the dealer's showroom. What can you tell from a color chip? All of us who purchased a car, ordered it without seeing the color on a car. GM did all of their advertising using P-Red cars. When I heard in Aug that GM was switching over to Victory Red, I was surprised. My dealer told me that the Chairman of the Board didn't think that P-Red was an appropriate Vette color. Hummmmmm. I think that's BS. There's got to be more to the story. Cost them lots of $ to switch. I'll bet that in age testing, they determined that P-Red didn't hold up well or simply the supply was cut short. In any event, P-Red is a great color and will most likely bring a greater price in the resale market a few years from now. If I had the choice again I’d go for P-Red.
