Default C5 or C6

I currently have a 00 A4 coupe. I'm looking at replacing it within the next few days and am trying to decide between an 04 and a C6. The 04 being cheaper and also it would give me more time to wait for the upcoming 6 speed auto. However if the 6 speed auto is definitely going to be out within the next year or so I'll just wait until then to replace the 00. I know it's an almost daily thread as to when the 6 speed auto is set to debut in the C6, but if anyone has the latest info I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks

I know the 6-speed automatic is coming, but I find it hard to believe that they would upgrade the 4-speed automatic for just one year. My guess would be the 2007 model year at the earliest, but that is only my guess.

Are you able to get the '04 at a really good price?

Your reasoning for going with the '04 is sound. The only question is, can you resist human emotion. I think buying the '04 and waiting is the smart thing. Consequently, getting the latest and greatest you can get is almost impossible to resist.

I would agree with your logic as far as waiting for a 6sp paddle shift on a subsequent year model. I have an '05 A4 and would have paid a substantial premium to get the newer style auto if possible. The A4 is working great but has limitations for some driving situations IMO.

If you can be sure the 6 speed Auto/paddle is coming out I feel it would warrant waiting.

Your call, if you don't mind me asking how good a price can you get on the '04. I have been looking locally and it seems the C5 prices are holding up pretty well. I looked at a clean '01 with 33,000 miles on it and they want almost $35,000.

Good Luck

Why not just keep what you have until what you want becomes available? Skip the 1st year depreciation loss.

If there's nothing wrong with your '00, why trade it for the '04? Wait until the C6 you want is available and trade it then.

I have no news on the 6speed auto, but I think you should get whatever car you like the best. Consider all the variables of course, but if you are flexible.... get what you want.

I appreciate all the advice. The 00 is at 58k, it's a driver, not a garage ornament. The main reason for selling it now rather than holding on to it for another year or two would be that once the mileage starts creeping up in the 60-70k+ range most prospective buyers will be turned off. I just got the new Car and Driver and it has a preview of the new STS-V. That car has a 440hp/430ft-lb motor with the new 6 speed auto. Hopefully it will get here soon. For now I'll most likely look at an 03 or 04 with under 10k mileage. Many Ive seen listed for around 35k. Once again, thanks for the advice!

IMHO the C6 has so much torque it really doesn't need a 6 speed auto. My advice don't drive a C6. Because when you do, the decision will be made. The difference is much wider than you can believe.

I tend to agree with this. I don't think that a 6 spd auto will bring much to the table for this car, except more complexity and more weight.

I agree!! The shifting pattern on 6spd autos will be computer controled and usually slower than driver input and when needed. I haven't driven a car yet with a shiftable auto that the response hasn't been slow. Mercedes has gone to a 7 spd. The wifes new car has it and I won't use it. I feel a little less thrilled using it than I would a regular manual. The last two gear changes are IMO only overdrive and thus pointless other highway gas saving.

I drive the A4 auto, this is enough car for me.
