Considering how good our exhaust manifolds are with their individual runners, kinda like shorty headers now, has anyone kept them and just replaced the cats with off-road pipes?
I know, equal length, long primary, merge collectors "should" outperform them, but really.... $1500 to $2000 systems are showing what, 10 to 15 hp increase on top of a tune and CAI?
If I can get 2/3 of that gain with two pieces of 3" pipe I'd consider that a worthwhile gain.

Has anybody tried this, or will I be the first?
We saw 40rwhp with headers and a tune on our Mustang dyno and we are conservative.
I believe there is another reason to consider buying headers, aside from the horsepower gain and that has to do with the benefits of better air flow from the exhaust. No doubt this can only add to overall engine longevity ...as long as there's no added NOS, cam, heads, supercharger, turbos....
We have installed all three of the "players" headers on ZO6's. They all perform about the same. 35-45 is about an average with either set and a good tune.
Where the headers seem to shine is more torque in the mid range with a tune!
Maybe I didn't state it correctly. It seems people are getting about 30 rwhp (+/-) with a tune and a CAI. Add headers to the mix and you are seeing 40 to 45 over stock. So.... seeing that gains aren't cumulative, 25 from a tune and 15 from an intake don't add to 40, more like 30, then adding headers to that mix doesn't add very much, mabye 10 to 15 more.
As so, maybe just cutting the restrictive cats off will give nearly the same results.
Gains average between 30 and 35hp to the wheels on my Mustang Dyno, headers are worth the investment. So much so that I own a complete system for a new Z06 that I have yet to buy

Exactly, I would like to see a stock engine with an aftermarked tune for max power, add headers then tune for them again, then measure the results.
Don't loose site of "power under the curve". Peak numbers don't always tell the tale. The headers bring power up in areas that street cars live in. This is what makes a street car feel strong. Believe it or not but 10-15 FTlbs is quite noticeable. If it is throughout most of the usuable power band its worth it!
Well, you guys may be right. I, however, seem to have DBS, that is dead butt syndrome, I can't feel a 2% change in power. I will dyno with and then without cats and report.

Well, Have a friend with a 05 Vert that he converted to a LS7 Z look a like. Car was all over this forum 6 months ago or so. We both had the same exact mods with Halltech filter, ported intake, Jeremy Fomato tune. Only difference was his car had longtubes and Corsa Sport cat backs. On the same dyno but different days my car did 478/441. His car did 483/ and i forgot the torque. 5 more hp. Maybe the day difference had something to do with it but otherwise all else was equal.
This is just one instance. Probably other stories out there with much different outcome.
jbp: Your response is exactly what I am talking about. Although rocks can be thrown at your results (different cars, different days, etc.) to summarize: adding headers to a modded Z only adds a small amount of HP. Thanks for posting.
My plan is to run some more miles with my tune, make sure it is happy: low negative LTFT's, zero KR. Dyno it, then chop those buggers off and retune, then dyno again.
