Default Brake PADS OEM or Best Alternative

Hi Guys,

I will probably be needing some brake pads soon, just wondering whether to stick with the GM OEM ones or go for an alternative. I do not track the car and do not want a pad to shorten the brake disc life, any suggestions please with some suggestions of where you can source these from (I live in the UK)

Thanks

Stock pads are a Ferrodo DSC 2500 compound.

Not bad but as you know they dust a lot.

Hawk makes a couple good choices for street cars. You could go to a ceramic pad and have zero dust and zero noise...but not quite as good stopping power. Or you could do a HPS pad, which is roughly equal to the OEM pads, just with a little better wear rate.

When I needed pads I went with Carbotech Ceramic Bobcat 1521. They are a monoblock design instead if a bunch of padlets and very low dust. Here's a little writeup taken from a website:

Carbotech™ Bobcat 1521™

The Carbotech Bobcat 1521™ is our high performance street compound that is our most successful compound. The Bobcat compound is known for its awesome release and modulation, along with unmatched rotor friendliness. Like our AX™ & XP™ line of compounds, Bobcat 1521™ is a Ceramic based friction material offering minimal rotor damage and non corrosive dust. Bobcat 1521™ offers outstanding performance, even when cold, low dusting and low noise with an excellent initial bite. This compound’s virtually perfect linear torque production provides incredible braking force without ABS intervention. Bobcat 1521™ operating range starts out at ambient and goes up to 900°F. Bobcat 1521™ is suitable for ALL street cars, perfect for your tow vehicle, police cruiser, and has won multiple SCCA Solo 2 and Prosolo National Championships. The Bobcat 1521™ compound has been found to last two-three times longer than OE pads you can purchase at a dealership or national retailer. Bobcat 1521™ compound has also been found to extend the life of your rotors 2-3 times. That’s one of the beauties of Carbotech Ceramic brake compounds. Bobcat 1521™ is NOT recommended for any track use.

I can take pay pal and ship you pads usps. The 1521 is a performance street pad. The 1521 will not harm your paint or your wheels and will perform like stock if not better. If you do a search you will see numerous threads on this pad. I can send request for payment through Pay Pal that will include your 7% forum discount. I am quoting price based on the 1 piece design pad.

F $282 R $239 less 7% = $484.53 + USPS $65.00

Ditto on the 1521 Carbotech! Forget about brake dust and I noticed zero difference in braking!

Carbotech Bobcat 1521 are great pads for street use. Better braking than OEM, less dust, about the same noise (occasional slow speed squeal for me - just like OEM). I'm using them with DBA 5000 front rotors and DBA 4000 rear rotors. Plus Adam is great to work with. Cheers - Jim

Carbotech all the way! I went with the AX6s and I am VERY pleased with them. They do squeak a little before they heat up, but I am ever so pleased with them. I like the one piece design.

Since you are doing the pads, I'd get rid of those HEAVY a$$ rotors for some slotted DBA 4000s. You lose a LOT of weight at the wheels and makes for an excellent upgrade that's worth every penny. IMHO.

That sounds good to hear, but it says on the site, that its not to be used for any track..I track occasionaly, but mostly due some street driving..is this gonna make a difference??

You might also look at Centric Posi-Quiets. They're cheap and much less dust than stock. Not for track use though.

If you track occasionally I assume you are like me, 2 to 4 track days a year, the 1521's work great. I've tracked since 2002 but do not consider myself an advanced driver. But if you are an advanced driver that can go through a set of stock pads in 1 or 2 track days, 1521's probably aren't the pads for you.

Careful tracking a car with brake pad's not rated for that duty, as know a guy who tried with Hawk ceramic's, and boy was he sorry. Braking quickly faded out before the first lap, and spent the whole next day pulling everything apart sanding off all the glaze. Just so you know.

We would be happy to help you out with the Hawk's or the stock pads. Just send me an email or give me a call.

Adam, I’m doing a c6 z06 brake conversion on my C5. The only thing left to buy is pads. I’ve been eyeing the carbotech bobcats so I was looking for a quote on fronts and rears, (1 Piece Design). Thanks, Joey.

I found the Carbotech 1521's great for the street. Since the pad material is compatible across their line, I also have run their aggressive track pads on the track (very experienced racer) and I swap the single pads before/after each track event. Since OP said no track work, the 1521s should work fine. On the rear I have them about half worn after 50K+ street miles.

I have been using the Centric Posi-Quiet Semi Metallic pads for over 10 years now and would also recommend them. I have about 75k on my last set and there is much less dust than stock and much cheaper.
