At the time my Z06 was only 5-6 months old. I had bought it new in spring of '10 (it's a '10 model).

I decided not to go to ZR1 for three main reasons.

The main reason was because I had wanted a 427 Vette since the first time I had ridden in one. (1969 427 Coupe in mid 70's).

So, since I had my 427 Vette, I asked myself why did I want to let it go (my wallet says only one Vette so make a choice). i did NOT want to let my 427 go because I knew I would regret it. I never drove the ZR, just like I never drove the Z06 before I actually bought it, sight unseen. First time to drive it was after signing papers leaving stealership for 125 mi drive home....(grinning all the way).

I still have that grin btw. So for me, it's a matter of personal taste/drsire. In the long ter, (really long term) the ZR will do well IMHO in so far as value, bit the Z06 may very well too.

It's really a personal decision and what "you" like and can afford.

For me, it was "427-Z06". That's also on my plates!!

Z06's
There hasn't been a "real" 427 Corvette since 1969. Sold my Z06, for a ZR1- no regrets.

I am not lusting after a ZR1. I think they are great cars but I really like the 427 naturally aspirated motor. The Z06 is light and fuel efficient and plenty fast. I like what I have. I will not pay $100,000 for a car whether I can afford it or not.

If I choose to buy a ZR1 down the road it will be a nice, low mileage example. I'm sure there is someone out there now who is taking very good care of one for me and not putting any miles on it while it depreciates significantly I waited patiently for the Z06 to depreciate and got a nice garage queen with 2,500 miles on it for 1/2 price. There will be similar deals with ZR1's if I choose to go that route in a couple of years. I think spending money foolishly, even if you can afford to, is unwise.

I'd rather make the move up towards a Z06 with Z07 package...but if you like the Zr1..go for it!

How do you figure? Big block versus small block. It's still 427 cubes (more or less). And it's still a Corvette.

The best of both worlds N/A vs. Forced induction. They are both great cars and you cannot go wrong either way depending on your financial status of course. All you need is a few tweaks to the Z06 and you have your own personal Zr1.

I agree with this, in fact today's "427" technology makes yesterday's big blocks seem like a diesel truck engine.

Always lots of semantics with big block/small block banter but the bottom line is that the LS7 is by far the best "427" GM has ever made IMO...

What do call the LS7 427, a fake 427? Although I agree not the original
"427" the LS7 427 crushes the original 427 in every way shape and form... What is your point?

I have owned a carbon zo6 for a month now. Previous zo6 was an o9 model. The tires make a big diff! Brakes are great too. They are the best brakes for a reason, they simply are! I just bought a new 2010 zr1. The zr1 is a bad *** car. The carbon fiber clear paint, seethru hood blown motor ptm system plus you just own a zr1! It was to track my cars I would stick with my carbon. Also and this is for me, for a few extra bucks I moved into a zr1. They are both crazy fast cars. I do notice the retuning of the carbons exhaust sytem, meaner more back popping etc. I cannot own both zr1 will be here tomorrow silver, 3lz silver.stiching interior, 2010 model. If you want to save 15 to 20 grand the go with the carbon. all 3 great cars driven them all.

Just another note on my decision. I like having a 600hp plus motor with a factory warranty. I run my cars nit everyday but very hard, florida has plenty of roads to go 0 to 100 and back to 0. I love both cars the money for all of them is very well spent in comparison to other hi end cars. I would not buy any other car because our quality and build has caught up while others have falken in materials used. I have a c4s, m5, m3n, and others. The zr1 is a great car and great buy. Second I would not buy other than an AMERICAN MADE CAR!

What interested me about the ZR1 in the past was the carbon ceramic brakes, the magnetic selective ride and the performance traction management. Not so much the fact that it has an engine with a super charger bolted on it and makes a hundred or so extra HP.

Then I did some more research and found out that you can now get your Z06 with the Z07 package giving you the awesome ceramic brakes, carbon roof, carbon ground effects, you can get mag. suspension etc. etc. and to boot you get an truly outstanding hand assembled N/A 427 engine, something that I have the feeling is not going to be around for too much longer with the new CAFE regs etc.

So in essence I figured out that I can basically buy a ZR1 with what to me is a more attractive engine package and save roughly 15k (and being honest when you are talking about paying this kind of money for a car an extra 10 or 15k is not going to stop most people from going one way or another). So...what I did was buy a Carbon Edition Z06 lol. I got all of the features of the ZR1 minus a couple hundred lbs and the PMT (which is now available on 2012's) plus I got my 427, got an interior that I absolutely love and have a truly limited edition car. I honestly do not regret my decision to go with the CE Z06 over the ZR1 one bit!
I agree with Ron, er "Werks," in San Jose. I went through the same thought process last month. I was actually on my way to get the ZR1, and had my eye on a gorgeous new Black one. I think this was primarily because I was influenced by the higher HP, and thought I needed all that I could get. However, we all know that the performance is not significantly different between them.

We drove both the ZR1 and a Z06. IMO, other than the scream put out by the LS9 (and it does scream) nothing else is memorably different, except maybe the Z felt lighter on its feet. My son raised the issue of the "limited edition" Carbon being available. One serious look at that offering and I was hooked.

There is no better sound than what the 427 puts out routinely, and that is where we live most of the time. And, for those that say today's 427 is not the same thing, I agree. I used to pilot a '69 427 back during pilot training days. I loved it, and would love it again if I had one, but there is no comparison to what PBC puts into the LS7 427 today. Yesterday's engine is nostalgic, today's is awesome. Thanks to you guys in Wixom who are reading these posts!

For me, I came home with 427 powered Inferno Orange Carbon #0122. But, I would also say this, knowing what I know now after living with the Z for a while, even if the Carbon wasn't available, I would purchase another Z with the CFZ and Z07 packages. I would do this even if the prices for the ZR1 and the Z06 were the same.

There is a reason why the Z06's doubled in production numbers in 2011 while the ZR1 numbers were cut in half. Everyone will have their own particular reasons for why this is so, but it is so. I think the thread that proclaims the death of the Z06 is quite premature.

Good luck with your decision. After you make it, maybe you would like to tell us your reasoning. I would like to know your thinking on the issue. One thing for sure, you can't be wrong!

BTW, there are still about 100 Carbon's left for sale, but they are going fast.

Have had both. Enjoy the ZR1 more. It is the complete package.

Best case of all: have both. If can't do that, it really just comes down to personal preference.

Both are great cars.

ZR1 is too expensive for a Corvette even if one can afford it. The ZO6 was pushing the cost limits for a vette especially with the cheap interior. The vette needs to stay around $80K.

I like the design of the Z06 better plus the 427. Either car you choose is a win though. Also my dream car is an F430 and like you said they are coming down in price.

I agree...I have always loved NA motors too! Plus, a 427 in a Corvette does it honestly get any better!

BOTH!!! We consider the Z06 "The Green Car" because of the gas mileage and the ZR1 "The Performance Car" because of the 26% increase in power.

I can easily afford to buy the ZR1, and love the ZR1, but as a Z06 owner, I don't feel that it is enough of an upgrade to justify the cost. If I had a Grand Sport or Base C6, a move to the Z06 or (maybe) the ZR1 would seem worth it. I can't justify spending $100k (plus) for a Corvette with the same exact interior as a $46k Corvette.

Well boys, my vote is cast and I pulled the trigger on a new 2010 ZR1.
My deliberating and obsessing got the best of me. My reasons for
making the move basically came down to a checklist of good and bad
and putting some value on each item.

Mind you, this is my way of justifying the move from a 2008 Z06 to a ZR1.
The numbers are strictly "my" numbers...

1. .2 model year newer Corvette (ZR1)--------$20,000
2. .638 HP LS9 ---------------------------------- $5,000
3. .carbon ceramic brembos --------------------$8,000
4. .magnetic selective ride with PTM -----------$3,000
5. .exposed/cleared carbon ---------------------$4,000
6. .19/20 wheels with michelin PS2 ZPs -------$3,000
7. .dual power seats with lumbar adjustments-$2,000
8. .power hatch assist -----------------------------$200
9. .bluetooth ----------------------------------------$50
10. exhaust tone ----------------------------------$750
11. Spring Mountain 2 day ZR1 driver training-$3000

*******************total**************$49,000

I'm WELL under the above total, and that includes 0% financing.
IMO it's a no-brainer. Here's a dealership photo of my new ride.

More to come when I get it home from Detroit.
