Default Driveline Vendors, Please Weigh In

I would like to consolidate the current thinking on Z06 half shafts into a dedicated discussion with some of the drivetrain specialists such as ECS, RPM and the rest. I am interested in what we have in or Z's, what is available and what we can expect for performance improvements. I used the term "Performance Improvements" because increased strength for drag racing is only one factor of what I consider performance. If you have a lightweight daily driver (such as myself) or a dedicated road racer, weight savings could be your performance goal and not necessarily brute strength. I would like to pose a set of questions if anyone would like to chime in.

Which year Z06's got half shaft upgrades in strength over the "06 Z's and what were the differences?

What do the complete half shaft assemblys weigh for each version of the shafts (complete, as removed from the car with CV joints intact) including the C-5 shafts?

How do the C-5 shafts compare in strength to all of the different C-6 factory shafts?

In order of probability of failure, what are the weak links in the shaft system chain, to include the output shafts, half shafts and CV joints, ect?

How about a quick list of aftermarket parts for the C-6 Z, what they weigh, what they cost and an estimate as to how much stronger they are compared to the different factory available parts?

What is the current consensus on what helps mitigate or eliminate wheel hop?

I went to the search and found bits and pieces all over the map and I think a dedicated discussion in one thread would be very helpfull to future questions about all or part of this type of discussion.

Thanks in advance,
Gary

I suspect the 2009 up ZR1 has the strongest half shafts. They(RH & LH) have two different diameters so as to have two different frequencies to help control wheel hop. My understanding is that the same half shafts are used in the 2009 up Z06's but not really sure.

True. ZR1 axles are a different spline count too. Would have to upgrade hubs/etc so not really an option for earlier cars.

C5 axles, 2008+ z06 axles, or DSS axles are your choices. For <$150 I don't think you can beat a set of c5 axles. Local friend runs 9.6@150mph pulling 1.4# 60"s on his 6 speed twin turbo vette using c5 axles with a c6z rear diff.

What I don't understand is why GM didn't just install the C5 axles in the C6 Z06 when they discovered they had a problem with breakage in 2006. After all, thay had them in the parts bin.

Does my 09 Z06 have the larger spline halfshafts that the ZR1 has? I know they changed the hub design for 09 in the Z06. My understanding is that the 09 Z06 has the larger splines.
