Safety Car
Driver isn't totally out of the equation since shifting fast is a big part, but it does take most of it out. Which is why I personally like it because it shows who has the faster car, it mostly eliminates the list of excuses involved in dig racing.

Only if the cars are geared the same...depending on the speed at which they start from it can favor one car or another's powerband and it is hard to reel someone in if they get the hit, just like being slow out of the hole.

Some cars aren't geared for 1/4mile so that can give advantage to the other car as well. I know you 1/4mile guys will never like roll racing your too busy living your life's a 1/4 mile at a time

Haha, I've done plenty of both...roll racing takes less skill sure, but isn't an absolute in determining which car is truly faster is all I was meaning. It's still a point a to b race as drag racing and driver skill/setup can still beat out a more powerful car depending on the race.

Given my 4.10 gears, if you give me the choice of the from when to when, I'll win, as I'll pick a speed that is at torque peak to start and I'll end it at the top of 4th. If I know your car well, I'll start it at the bottom of one of your gears.
So yes, there is some real skill to the roll as well, but the skill IMHO is picking the race to put yourself at an advantage and/or your opponent at a disadvantage.

In the late '50's I watched Arfons 1200 HP Allison powered Green Monster run 160+ MPH and consistently get beat by a little flathead V8 who never ran much over 110. However, if the race would have been an extra 200 feet, Arfons would have never lost.
I can outrun a locomotive on foot for the first 50 feet and my car is much faster for any distance, but neither has enough power to pull a loaded 100 car train for 10 feet.
It's been said that the thing a 1000 HP Vette has in common with a 400 HP Vette, is a 12 second timeslip.

I've not done much of roll, but to me, the winner of the roll is the one who knows his/her car and the opponents car the best and gets to set the race.
