Default Installed Vette Air now car cuts in and out on hwy????

So I installed the Vette Air on my 08 H/C/I ZO6. It has a Halltech CAI with the shield around the filter. So when I drive the car down the highway and I get above 60 miles an hour the car feels like it’s cutting in and out or it jerks a little. What would cause this? Do I need to re-tune it for the extra air or is it creating turbulence with the shield around the filter? And should I just remove the shield. I know the shield keeps the hot air from coming in from the filter but I also just installed a LG vented hood so now it could release the heat from there. Thank you for any help.

It's called "surging", caused by turbulence at the MAF.

MD and I tried installing a honeycomb screen in the airflow path (similar to what GM used to put on the LS1 MAFs). He was trying to solve a more serious cam-based reversion issue, I was trying to solve the problem you have here (intake with airflow directly from the front of the car).

For me, it was "successful" in that it did reduce it somewhat (and I saw a more stable pattern in the MAF logging), enough that I forget about it until a question like this comes up. Your mileage may vary..

i just took the halltech shield off and went and drove it and it fixed it. If I leave the shield off do you think that it will be OK? With the shield off will I still get the benefit of the vet air? I know the shield keeps the hot air from the motor but since now I have a vented hood it should be ok. what do you think is better? I hwy race the car and I just want the best combo.

Same issues I had by doing the propped shroud mod...... turbulent air affecting the MAF, which is more prevalent in the MAF forward design of the later Halltech intakes.
This happens only at light throttle, not WOT.
I heard that if you placed a deflector at the opening of the Vette Air at the airfilter, it solves this problem.

Note that Vararam intakes have this same blast of ramair coming into the filter, but the MAF is located at or near the original location as stock....up near the throttle body and away from the filter.

I have the Vette Aire with a Haltech 103 and beehive and my car drives fine. No surging at partial or WOT.

I talked to Jim Hall on the phone about this exact subject before I bought my 107R intake. He emphatically told me to dump the Vette Air and blank the hole before installing his intake. He went on to say that the turbulence caused by it will cause problems with the MAF.

So my question is what is better. Do I get rid of the vette air and block it and put the shield back on or do I keep the vette air and just remove the shield? I was even thinking what about keeping the vette air and cutting partial of the side of the shield to release some of the pressure so it would not cause turbulence and I could keep both? Like a said I do roll racing

What is it that you keep calling a "shield"?

He's referring to the Haltech Beehive heat shield:

I would try putting a diffuser of some sort in front of the outlet of the Vette Air, to see if that helps.
Use some double sided tape from 3M to attach it so it could be removable.

I hope this is not a stupid question but what do you mean by a Diffuser?

I wanted to make sure you weren't installing something else on the filter or in the filter area. I find it odd that you are seeing this problem with the BeeHive installed, but not with it removed. Seems to me that air flow from the Vette Air scoop would increase with the BeeHive removed. But if you are feeling it, it's happening......

I installed the VetteAir scoop a year ago, and I have the BeeHive and the MF108. Dan mentioned earlier that I installed a honeycomb, which is correct. MAF Hz is pretty solid, so the Honeycomb must be helping. You might consider installing one yourself. You will need to recalibrate the MAF if do though.

That's interesting because I also have the Halltech with the beehive shroud and my car in 5th/6th seems to "jerk" on occasion.I just did a 4-5 hour trip each way and experienced this.I hope the honeycomb fixes the issue.

check our other deflectors under the front because they do a lot to help the flow to the intake.

Anything that will keep the blast of outside air to directly hit the air filter. If you can get some plastic or aluminum stock that has an edge where you can apply some double sided tape, you would place this the width of the Vette Air opening directly in front of the filter....keeping the air from blasting straight into the filter body itself.
Make sense ?
