Someone pointed out that the engine oil and trans fluid temps are measured in the engine/trans, at approximately the hottest accessible points. But the trans cooler in our radiator is being bathed in coolant that has already been through the radiator and is cooler than what the temp gauge shows.
So if our coolant temp shows 220', the trans cooler is probably sitting in coolant that is around 180'. Or thereabouts...
exactly !!! And due to the thermodynamic properties of liquid to liquid , the radiator can cool the trans fluid way cooler than air to air . If you are drag racing you should run the radiator first then secondary trans cooler in series to cool the fluid further .
by passing the radiator imo and running ONLY and air to air cooler you cannot accommodate huge spikes in trans temps . Hot lapping at a drag strip exacerbates this problem . Unless you are running a massive air to air and cool it in the pits using various different methods .( remote pump and cooler or blower on TQ , or both )
what kinda trans cooler is this and also what type of numbers are you getting after the install

I am using a B&M cooler with a fan on it. The brake duct leads air to the cooler and I installed a grill in the fender well ot evacuate air behind the cooler.
Intially, I used the temp switch supplied by B&M with the cooler and found that by the time it heated up enough to switch on the fans, the actual trans temp was already higher than I liked. I have since wired the fan to run all the time and after today, I am convinced this is a successful install, and would do it again.
It is 90 degrees today and extremely humid.
I drove 2 hours on the highway and the trans temp settle at about 155 and stayed there. In some stop and go traffic it creeped up to 165 but not over that today. I have seen it go to 180 after a prolonged traffic jam but that is the max I have seen and am happy with that result.
Sorry to bring this up.
But this is a very useful thread.
I'm Going to install 2 coolers in both side (EOC & TOC) with the same @realcanuk cooler B&M 70298 Hi-Tek.
The biggest challenge is to figure out the correct fitting sizes and angles for clean install because it's not available where I live and have to order it from US.
I am working on this right now too. Has anyone used a Derale 15960 Hyper-Cool instead of the B&M? It is quite a bit cheaper than the B&M and basically the same size. If so how well does it work?
