Default Edelbrock E-Force; quick tuning question

I recently bought a 2008 Coupe with auto trans. I had it 'tuned' by my local dyno shop guy, who is an absolute whiz at Chevy tuning and automatic transmissions.

My plans are to install the Edelbrock E-Force shortly, and I would like to let my local guy do the tuning. Will Edelbrock email me the baseline tunes, or will they force me to buy their handheld tuner?

I would actually like to be able to install the E-Force in my own garage, then 'rent' a handheld tuner from someone, and then drive the car over to my guru to have him tweak it all up.

You guys must run into these types of dilemmas all the time. What's the best solution?

Thanks, Dave F. in Rhode Island

The hand held comes with the E-Force along with their "canned" tune. You can use it or your tuner can set the MAP, MAF, Spark, Fuel, and others to get your car tuned. I tried the E-Force tune on my car but it was not "for me". The 2007 is a proportional tune and I didn't like it. The 2008 does not use a proportional tune and the canned tune might be a good starting spot for your tuner. It'll certainly make the car quite drivable and you can go to your local tuner for his/her tweaks.

If you buy the complete kit, the programmer is included. If you buy a tuner kit, you will have to purchase injectors, a pulley, and tune for your application.

You used to be able to download Edelbrock's tune from their website, but they have removed that link.

Either way, I think their tune is proprietary for their SCT programmer, and I don't know if it can be opened/viewed with EFI Live or HP Tuner.

I don't believe the tune was locked when we tried to work from it being installed on the ECM with EFILive. I was making edits with my EFILive per their requests. I also loaded many tunes from them with the handheld. They may have locked it on later editions. Dunno...

My 1591 kit came with the tuner, but since we did headers and hi flo cats at the same time I got it custom tuned. The car was driven about 30 mins away to the tuners shop and had no problems doing so you just don't want to stab it until after the tune is done.

Thanks for replies so far, gents. My 'guru' uses EFILive.

I would likely be buying the "complete kit", but I thought the tuner was extra $$$. I guess I need to do more homework. I just don't want to waste $500 on a handheld tuner, but I do need a baseline tune so that I can drive the car to the dyno shop.

If I could download the files from Edelbrock, then I'd get my 'guru' to stop at my house and upload/tweak them - that might work well.

Thanks, Dave

What software does your tuner use? HP tuners or EFIive? If it is HPTuners I can probably assist.

If I were you I would get the tuner kit and leave out the tuner. You can drive your car that far without hurting anything.

That's what I would do if I had it to do over. I just wasted money by getting the kit with the tuner.

Buy the tuner kit. Buy better injectors than they supply, and get a good tune.

If you have AAA Plus they will tow you 100 miles. If you don't want to drive it.

Very interesting. Thanks for this feedback on buying the 'tuner kit'.

"Buy better injectors", you say?? Damn, I woulda thought that Edelbrock's injectors were of ample quality. What brand would you recommend?? Keep in mind, I am looking for dependable street driving only, no racing. I just want something that will deliver the fuel accurately and be trouble-free.

Thanks

If you are sure that you are stopping with the install of the eforce, the injectors they supply are great. You could use the same ones if you buy the tuner kit. (it comes without injectors.) If , like most of us nuts, you are going to want more power after a while, then go with bigger injectors right away rather than having to pay to change them again later.
Only you can be honest with yourself and decide this in advance.

Yeah man, this is a good point. I have been reading that if I want to decrease the pulley size even a little bit (from stock 3.5" to 3.25" for instance), then I would need new injectors.

Decisions, decisions..........

remember if you go with the 'can" tune it requires it be written over a stock tune so flashing over your new tune will give some funny results.

The 599 kit ships with the same injectors used in the stock ZR1...52lb Bosch. If I recall correctly, the tuner kit comes without injectors, without a pulley, without coil covers and without the handheld tuner.

You're at least the second guy that has mentioned this. However, I spoke with Edelbrock tech guy this morning, and I asked him that EXACT question, and he said the canned tune would flash in OK.

I guess I would just use the canned tune and then drive carefully over to my tuner's shop to have it checked/tweaked.

I wish things were a little clearer on this point though.......

Yeah, I am 99% settled in on the #1591 599hp kit. There's a $500 rebate until end of year, so my total cost should be around $7500 and then another $500 for fuel pump install and tuning, so I am at ~$8000 grand total.

Can anyone tell me - how difficult is it to pin the crank??? I just can't believe the LS3 crank snout has no key.........

Thanks very much, Dave F.
