Default E-Force 599 kit - you guys using low temp stat?

Doing my final homework prior to buying the E-Force 599 kit.

Are you guys running lower temp thermostats? I know this topic has been beat to death for standard engines, but not aware of the 'consensus' when it comes to forced induction engines.

It seems to make sense that you would want to keep under-hood temps lower with a blower. But I'm fully willing to be properly chastised if I'm wrong!

160 stat here too. And adjust the fans to take full advantage.

Not worth it and doesn't change anything as once it's open it's open.

Yes, I used a 160 and believe it helps, especially on cooler days. However, when its 85 deg or above there is nothing that will help these cars. It took me 20 min to change the thermostat and refill the coolant, so changing it is no big deal.

However with a 160 thermostat the coolant temp will still run 175-195, so I took it one step further and took the thermostat out all together. I have been running this way for the last 1 year and all is great, especially on cool track days. Coolant temps still run 150-180 depending on outside temp and amount of airflow through the radiator (vehicle speed).

Here are my latest dyno results from last Saturday: 750 WHp, 770 WTq
And my best 1/4 mile time and speed a few weeks ago: 10.28 at 141mph

Thanks,

Thanks for the input, but I think I will follow the other guys on this one. I recently sold my C5 and for a time I ran 160 stat in that LS1, and the cruising temps dropped by a solid 15 degrees or more.

But I agree that if you're sitting in traffic, on a hot day, then the engine (low-temp stat or high-temp stat) will still get up to same coolant temp. At that point, you'd need bigger radiator or more fan, etc......

Thanks for all feedback gents! 160 stat for me...

Nope. OEM stat and OEM fan settings and I live in Florida.

Too many melted fan connectors. I'm suspicious of changing the fan settings and I don't race thus I could care less about a few HP that might be lost due to that supposedly seriously excessive heat.

If the car is good like that there is no reason to play with it. The fan connector issue is more related to running them at 100% power, not turning them on earlier. I never had a connector problem with the stock fans, or my duals, but they run at max of 90%.

Stock thermostat
Runs great, I might consider changing mine someday.

Isn't there some kind of issue changing the fan setting on an E38?

There is no issue changing it. The issue is you can not turn it on below a certain temp (I am not on my computer and forget the temp exactly). Upgrading the OS with hptuners allows you to set the fan to come on earlier than stock.

Oh yes now I remember. We may have had this conversation before. 192* is the lower limit. I looked into changing the OS but got lost in the details. I'll have to have someone lead me by the hand to install the correct OS. To me it makes no since installing a lower temp therm without being able to lower the fan settings.

Default fan cutin points

going to put in a 160 tsat as engine likes to run in the 220 neighborhood in traffic and after a few 1/4 mile runs. but the sct tuner will not let me into the modify section to adjust the fans. any ideas as this is the edelbrock factory tune.

Just checked with HPT and 2.5 bar OS has the fan adjustment but I think you have to have the pro version to get it. Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong.

Here is the link to HPT with my question. Their answer was a bit weird -

I am not sure if you need the pro version to upgrade the OS, as I have the pro version. Send them an email. They respond quickly.

I asked them via their forum. If I don't hear from them quickly I will email them.

Thanks!

Yes it does! When you moving you can cool down more with the 160. The stock maintains 190 or what ever it is!

Very true but in city traffic, don't you go up to the temperatures that the fans allow? Driving at highway speed doesn't probably even use the fans (especially if you're in the freezing climate anywhere north of the Georgia/Florida border ). I personally don't like a car that is running at 160 degrees in the winter. The heater seems a bit sluggish to me and my comfort is more important than 5 HP (or whatever)?

I'm running stock t-stat and stock fan settings. I have no temperature issues with the car but I'm not at the track on the weekends either.

You know both a 180* and a 160* thermostat are wide open when your coolant is at 190* right?

Also, your car is fine at 190* so don't waste your money. Us Arizonans run our cars when it's 120* outside and there's been no difference between the 160s and the 180s.
