LS2 APS Issues
Background
- Car was stored for ~16 mos until December 2013
- I have put almost 1000 trouble free miles on car since starting to drive again
- To my knowledge, fairly stock LS2 with APS kit (upgraded turbos and other miscellaneous APS pieces)
- MSD BAP replaced in early 2012
- Car ran very good up until ~1 month ago
Problem
- Ran car many times under full boost
- After one particular run, ~15 minutes later (normal driving for 15 mins), got a check engine light
- Also noticed that oil pressure was pegged (isolated that to failed sender unit)
- Car is also slow cranking when fully warmed up
- Car was driven approximately 500 miles since code started showing
- Since the code appeared, I have run the car hard and it runs well, not 100%, but pretty close
- Black "soot" coating exhaust tips and all over rear bumper (if you wipe with fingers, you can dust off "soot" with no oily residue left behind)
Addressed to date
- Oil sensor issue resolved (sending unit)
- Slow start still exists (replaced battery with 690CCA battery)
- Tested charging system (all seems to be fine)
- Car starts great when cold, just not when fully heated (slow start)
- Code is 0357 (#7 cylinder misfire)
- Replaced slightly fouled plug in #7
- Swapped coil and plug wire between #5 (code remains as 0357)
- Pulled oil fill cap while running, and there is no excessive blowby coming out of the cap
- No weird noises coming from the engine (figured if piston failed there would be significant noise)
Questions
- What are the chances that I lifted a ring land on #7? I have been told that #7 is notorious for failure.
- What about the possibility of a stuck injector on #7? Would this cause that cylinder to run rich leaving the soot and also cause the slow start condition when heated up? When cold, the fuel has already evaporated, thus not being an issue.
- Any thoughts on directions to pursue first?
I will run a compression test and leakdown test when I get some time. I was just hopeful that someone might have experienced something similar. Thanks in advance.
