water/methanol injection cools your combustion temps, air intake temps, egts, etc. This gives a cooling effect, raises your octane, reduces your chances of detonation.

There is an atomizing injector that sprays a fine mist into your intake tract. In your vehicle its typical to install in the cold side pipe (up pipe). Its a simple 1/8th threaded fitting that atomizes so its easy to install.

How it activates depends on what system you get. Some examples

ON/OFF. These have a boost switch. Set a switch to a certain PSI and the system turns on at that boost level and stays on until you drop below that level.

Progressive. These are a highly tuneable system that injects based on boost or based on boost/tps. you set the min/max boost and as your boost pressure increases your flow rate does as well.

using a switch to turn on/off manually is bad idea.

The better systems on the market will have an integrated failsafe that can alert you when you are under a certain flow rate or perform some action.

To add to that:

injection strategies can also inject based on pulse-width and boost simultaneously.

The power gains that you see are due to two major factors:

1) The cooler intake air charge creates more density. This denser air charge means that you get more air going into the combustion chamber through the intake valves over a given period of time at a given boost pressure. The more air you have in there, the more fuel can be burned with it to release energy and make power. This is nothing new, intercoolers have the same overall affect.

2) The water methanol goes right into the combustion chamber along with the cooler/denser air charge. Methanol has a very high octane rating, which essentially means it does not spontaneously combust and that it burns in a very orderly controlled way even under extreme conditions. Water has a virtually infinite octane rating because it does not really combust. So with all this high octane benefit in the air charge, your whoel air/fuel mix is about as resistant to detonation (AKA Knock) as it would be on a ncie cold day with race gas. So you can run more boost pressure, more igntion timing, and even get away from overly rich air/fuel ratios to make much more power, without excessive heat or detonation.

So the big power gains you see out there are the result not only of the cooling effects, but also of the fact that you can now run a race gas-like tune, everyday, on pump gas, safely.

Good explanation. I might add that the best way to trigger the meth, especially with PD blowers is with a MAF controller. This will regulate the amount of meth sprayed progressively with the amount of air taken in.

Going to have my car supercharge also in a few weeks,i am on the fence about meth, the tuner and installer says it is a safey thing.I don't want but around 500 to 550 to the wheels, got a ECS 1500 with headers and x pipe high flow cats.I should make that pretty easy,so I don't really know what to do I have been wondering if just a normal supercharged LS-2 with a good safe tune and fairly low boost would be just as good as having meth, just pondering in this.I can always look forward to more hp later if I don't have it by adding it later.Dont really plan to racing it much just want to have a little street fun now and then and once and a while go to the track and play a little.I still say that with a safty tune sc car should be ok to run for a long time without blowing up without meth, for now anyway, what you guys say?

No reason to touch it at 500-550 unless you want to maintain that power in hot weather. That is one big advantage to meth is overcoming high summer temps which would cause a non-meth setup to be down on power.

Would it still be ok to run it some in hot weather, just let it cool down if I run a couple times or what.Your saying I can run it in hot weather but it would be down on power but still be ok to run some and not hurt the engine.

Yes, you could beat the crap out of it in hot weather, just maybe making 500rwhp instead of 550rwhp. No safety issues, especially at that power level. For 550rwhp I wouldn't touch meth.

A heads/cam/7L ysi are and a ls2/ls3 making 650 are vastly different. Ls7 on mild boost will make 700 with ease, 2/3 without the cubes/etc need a lot more cylinder pressure to make that power so yes, anything past ~600rwhp on ls2/3 I would add meth.
