Default Fuel flow setup

I saw a buddy's car the other day and saw he had the 'dead-head' system(bottom) pictured below, mine is free-flow setup(top) that I haven't tested or tuned it yet.

His is boost referenced, mine is not. However he makes a lot more power than I do.

I just wanted input on which would be best and why.

Just depends on application. Either can work. Top is preferred and can support more power, but if you have plenty of excess capacity/line/rail then it doesn't matter, just do what is easier to plumb.

Most factory cars now use the 2nd setup. That is how the factory vettes are.

I cover this in my training all the time.

The full return system (top) is ideally better for maintaining an exact desired rail pressure, but at the expense of added plumbing and heating the fuel.

The deadheaded system (bottom) is simpler to install and heats the fuel less, but requires that one design it properly for the target fuel flow (power) to avoid head losses (losing pressure at the engine compared to at the regulator), or at least compensate for them.

Either can work just fine if properly implemented. I run the a manifold referenced remote regulator (bottom) on my personal TT C6 since avoiding fuel heating was a bigger priority for me on my street car than worrying about 1-2psi of rail pressure error.
