sounds like a good idea now, but when i drilled it, i definitely wasnt thinking i would be pulling the balancer off on a regular basis.

This ^^^. This is what I would do. I have a ATI dampner and when I pull my motor apart for new pistons I am going to have a machine shop cut a key slot into my crank.
